Staying in Pagosa Springs for a week during Christmas. Any tips or suggestions on fishing in that area during that time of year? I've never been there. Thanks in advance.

never been to pagosa, only On the other side where the conejos is, I do know that you will likely be limited to tailwaters only. Maybe the san Juan. All the high country stuff will be frozen over and inaccessible.

What Mckinney said. From everything I've been reading at least, you're going to be limited to tailwaters. Good enough reason to go ahead and make plans to drive down to the San Juan Bout an hour and a half one way is all, from Pagosa. I'm planning to be there about a week ahead of you and spend at least 2-3 days on the water.

I hate to tell you this but we have ZERO snow (in town) and none in the forecast through Christmas. That's bad for us who love a white Christmas but the good news for you is that the San Juan through town is still fishing pretty well. The Piedra and it's tributaries have slowed down quite abit but a few fish can still be caught. Even with no snow the forest services gates to many of the higher elevation lakes and streams are still scheduled to be closed Dec 15th.
As mentioned above the quality waters of the San Juan is just 90 miles away and the Animas river right through Durango is only 60 miles away.

I may be rubbing shoulders with you on the Piedra! Heading up the 22nd - the 3rd. Have a place on Vallecito and can not wait!
Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

Krawlin ..I wondered if you closed on the new place ...congratulations. The First Fork Road gate up the Lower Piedra is scheduled to be closed on the 15th but the area around the campground would still be accessible. As long as we don't get any snow the Upper Piedra would still be accessible but bring warm clothes ...gets cold down in that canyon. I'm not sure what the Pine would be like this time of year. I'll shoot you an PM with my email so maybe next summer we can fish ...or drop by the fly shop to see if I am hanging out.

Would absolutely love that!!! sent you a pm and I look forward to earning a stool in the shop to shoot the chit!
We moved in over the Thanksgiving area and have the family coming in - getting the warm gear ready and will definitely try to get out to find accessible water! I need all the help I can get - NEWBIE!
