X2 on heat gun. I heated and used a plastic scraper to get most of the old glue off. Then I cleaned the residue off with acetone, went over the area with scotch bright pad, then cleaned again with acetone and put on new keel protector.

When I got chunks cut in mine I called the manufacturer. They said to email pictures of the keel guard and they sent a new one no charge. The instructions are on their website for removal of the damaged one and cleanup for new install. Pretty much what Dayne said above. Takes an hour or two depending on how many beers are involved.
