I'm sure this question has probably been asked time and time again on TFF but if I step on my trolling motor and it causes interference on my depth finder, what is the cause? Is something not grounded properly?

If you have a minnkota, pull the head cap off and see if the fuse is blown. There are multiple reasons for electrical interference: prop is knicked up/damaged, transducer cable is close to the tm power wires, bad bearings in the tm motor, graph powered by the tm batteries. I’ve even swapped graphs around and had the interference stop.

Sometimes a ferrite choke will help too.

I run Motorguide trolling motors and Lowrance electronics. On the last 2 trolling motors I have had to install ferrite chokes to reduce the interference.

Is the graph wired direct to the starting battery (recommended)

If it is wired to an accessories switch and or fuse panel that can create interference as well.

Wired direct to cranking battery. When I'm not stepping on the power button the graph reads perfectly clear. Fuse is not blown.

Is there a specific ferrite choke I'm supposed to use, and is there any specific place where it's best to install?

Any ferrite bead will help. Always install near source of power.

Ferrites should be attached close to the equipment to filter any RFI that is picked up along the cable.

On a transducer cable just before the transducer plug, and on a power cord just before its plug.
