I have a 1985 Mercury 175 that is leaking down and saw that the tilt cylinder seals are spitting up a little. Looks to be just removing the pin on top and swinging the cylinder down for disassembly. Have read that the motor bracket may need to be removed. Anyone have any insight on the procedure?

I would like to know as well. Think it is about $200-$250 to have seals replaced. Believe that what it was for parts and labor on mine. But it would like to know how difficult it would be to do myself

You remove a pin at the bottom of the tilt ram to remove it also. Biggest problem is having to remove the piston from the rod so you can change the top cap seals. You need a really good, big vise, like a milling machine vise. Replacing the seals will fix a leak down problem about 25 % of the time, especially on an older unit. Many times the tilt cylinder is scratched or scored and can`t be repaired. Parts are over 100 dollars as the seals only come in a kit. 2 kits to get all you need.#6 and #13. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc2/...ents/parts.html You need a sprag wrench to remove the seal caps another 80+ dollars.

Trim and Lower units are the 2 things that are best serviced by a specialist due to the cost of the tools necessary to service properly. Remove and deliver will in most cases be the most cost effective solution.

If you don't see external trim fluid leaking out of the system then you may have a valve body that is stuck open a little. There is no way to confirm this. You will have to start with resealing the system then testing to see if you resolved the problem. If not replace valve body.

Appreciate it Gary and Tommy. I do have fluid leaking out of the tilt. I already have all the tools and am fairly mechanically inclined. I thought I would have a shop do it, just due to timing at the moment, but getting quotes for replacing seals from $350-$800 plus parts. I think I'll give it a go myself.
