I'm thinking of buying some gold to augment the investment portfolio. Where do you guys buy and do you recommend bars or coins?

Wow you guys are particularly useless today. Nobody out there keeps a small <5% portion of their portfolio in gold?

If you're going to buy the physical precious metal, I would say go with coins. Those seem to raise fewer eyebrows when you get ready to sell some. Bars can be poured easily with any alloy mix. When I had metals, I wasn't thrilled with all the hands out in the buy/sell process. When I did it, I had to pay to have bars assayed by a bonded metallurgist before they could be sold. It wasn't cheap. I have since decided to make my "gold" investments via ownership in ETFs that in turn own gold, mining leases, etc. I have found that to do very well for me without seeing gains eaten by all the buy/sell fees.

Gold ETFs that hold the commodity are an efficient way to invest in the metal. No need to store coins or bullion in a safe and very fast and easy to liquidate your position. If you want to hold coins, I would go for ones that have no numismatic value baked into the purchase price, such as South African krugerrands.

My FIL bought a coin for 4800. He then sold it a few years later for 4000 to buy a 4 wheeler. Talk about one poor investment after another.

APMEX is a reliable, trustworthy source for gold and silver. Be patient and watch for their sales at just a few dollars over spot price.
Bullion coins are, in my opinion, a better purchase than gold bars. Common coin types are easier to verify as genuine without doing an acid test or assay. I prefer US pre-1933 gold coins, but theres many common gold coins with widespread acceptance, like British sovereigns or Swiss 20 franc coins.
Modern bullion coins are good too.
