I have been participating on the sister forum (THF) since 2008. Recently found this forum. I have been a causal fisherman lately, Fish our local golf course (mostly bass). Yesterday I went fly fishing for my first time! Wow, it was great. I had a 1/2 day guided fish in Vail on the local streams. Hooked 10 trout, lost a few and missed many bites. Love the technical aspect of this style of fishing. When I return back home, I'm going to look into getting some gear and start fly fishing in Central Texas.

Nice fish! I've been to Vail and looked down on Gore Creek in town there and seen some really stout browns and bows. How did you fish up there? Was it nymphs, dries, streamers...there's some deep holes for such a not so big of stream.
I'm sort of all in on fly fishing even though there's sometimes easier ways. Catching large stocked rainbow trout with woolly buggers from a pond in Colorado was my gateway drug. I thought it might translate well to stalking redfish here on the coast and I feel pleased with where it has taken me. Lately, I've gotten into the freshwater near my home and a Largemouth bass attacking a deer hair diver does not stink.
Those great central Texas rivers ought to be prime. I still have plans to hit the Colorado River around Bastrop/Smithville. Fly fishing just gets better the more you do it. Casting, line management, fly selection. I think I'd really be into the cold water trout thing more if I knew I could get up there more often. There's a lot of meat there with all the different styles and matching hatches. Texas has plenty of interesting fish to keep me going and hey, you've got the Guad right there close by.

If you get the chance while there...or rather, make sure you fish the Frying Pan which is nearby...beautiful, with loads of fish especially nice browns.

Karstopo:
Set up a leader with a strike indicator followed by one egg and two nymphs. Tossing and mending while floating downstream. We fished both deep and shallow areas.

Awesome color on that fish. Makes those paled Texas stockers seem so plain.
