My concern is the inability for the Government to track earnings from valuation increases. creating an environment where bitcoin owners have no incentive to report earnings and thus no taxes paid on these earnings. If this grows enough the government will no doubt put major regulations on companies that accept bitcoins as payment and companies that act as intermediaries. Also may come back on those who never reported their earnings. Government regulation is imminent and most in the crypto world invite that. It immediately legitimizes the value and no one can no longer sit on the sidelines stating its a scam. Bitcoin and other currencies are not going away, it's now just a matter of which crypto will survive and overtake Bitcoin(if ever). I have some in Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, Zcash, Dash and Monero among a few others.

Just like any other activity, you are supposed to report income to the IRS... obviously most people will not since i doubt you will see any 1099s issues for Gains on bitcoin investment or on bitcoin mining. IRS has a whole section on it though

Hoarded by the Japanese? Now if we can just sell a few trillion to China then consider our debt paid off, we'd be in business.

I have been studying these cryptocurrencies the last two days and am still confused. Seems like there are dozens of them that started off small and have exploded this past year. To me it looks like alot of them all do the same thing and I don't know why one is better than the other. Surely only a few will survive to become useful for what they are intended. This is the video pitch that peaked my interest. I looked at Eroscoin that is doing their rollout now and you can buy them for .15 each. Crypto promo video

Its very easy to "cash it in". Open a Coinbase account, it's the #1 exchange on the 3 leading cryptos, Bitcoing, Ethereum and Litecoin. You can buy them there and also cash them in directly to your bank account. Fairly simple process.
I'm in ~10 different cryptos now for various reasons and done a ton of research. The blockchain is the biggest revelation in years and the underlying cryptos that are running on the blockchain have intrinsic value based on their application.
There are multiple scenarios where Bitcoin (or another crypto) are helping people dramatically.
Think of the legal cannabis industries where they deal in 100% cash because of the Fed rules on banking. Now someone can buy a crypto, spend it at a dispensary and it's deposited into their wallet versus handing all that cash.
Another very viable scenario is people sending money across borders. Western Union is the #1 way to do that now and they will go the way of Blockbuster Video....mark my words.. If you send $20 via WU, it costs a person %25 - $4.99. Sending $20 worth of Botcoin will cost you less than $1. Then all the 3rd world countries where their FIAT is worthless and having the ability to pay for goods and services via these types of applications will change the world..
Bit of a ramble but I am pretty passionate about the future of cryptocurrencies...I am in a similar tech business.
It's also a boon to unstable countries like Somalia, Algeria, Ethiopia, Chad, etc. where you would NEVER trust that countries currency but you can use Bitcoin to transact business because it is immune to political and economic turmoil I still want to know who Satoshi Nakamoto is

Pacertom if I wanted to get into cryptos which ones would you recommend? I think Bitcoin and Etherium are the two strongest right now but what are some of the new ones you are watching that haven't taken off yet? Is there a way to invest in the block chain technology like someone mentioned rather than specific coins. Or are they all the same thing. Still confused.

Long term and simple, open a Coinbase.com account. They only sell 3 of the top 5 currencies, Bitcoin Ethereum and Litecoin. These will survive and Coinbase being the largest (by far) exchange/wallet service out there does intense scrutiny before adding a coin to their network. Buy some and hold it for 5 years. Actually trading currencies is more complex, you need an exchange account like Poloniex, Bitfinex or many others. You would need to fund your trading account with Bitcoin that you purchase through Coinbase or other service. We're all looking for that next one that sits at $.20 cents and ready to move to $1, $10, 100 ....Thats where the hours and hours of research come in. I do like a couple cheap ones that have potential based on what they are trying to solve and only thrown a little $$ at them. Aragon, Civic, EOS, Golem, SALT, SC, BTS - then the big 4, Ripple, Ethereum, Bitcoin and Litecoin.....Litecoin is in my opinion the best bet for the money. It's cheap and physiologically for the average person, it affordable to get into...Bitcoin is ~$6,000 per coin - Litecoin is $55 per coin Adding one more thing.....There is a hard fork for Bitcoin on November 16th. There will be a ton of money flowing into and out of Bitcoin and other cryptos until the dust settles. I expect Litecoin, Ethereum and Ripple to make solid gains post Bitcoin hard Fork to segwit2X.
