I always thought I would make a good hobo. All I need was a magic sword and a three legged dog.

Stress less, relax more. Go fishing.

I knew a couple people that made a career out of it back in the day. And retired with excellent benefits. No idea if they have they still offer a nice pension.

And I know who "Jeff" is.

Yep, my grandfather is a retired engineer from KCS. Once my grandmother reached a certain age, she gets retirement check from the treasurary department as well! They both get a check every month. I imagine somewhere close to $7k a month total. If you retire from the railroad, I dont think youre able to get social security either.

My oldest son is in their Conductor Training Program right now. Hes got a B.S. in Supply Chain Management and Logistics, and quit a good job with an Engineering and Procurement firm in Houston. He said this program is infinitely harder to get through than College was. The trainees take quizzes almost every day while in class and tests two to three times a week. 84 is passing on a test. If you fail a test you get one opportunity to re-take the test. Fail and you are out. If you make it through conductor training and get selected for Engineer school and flunk out, you get fired, not demoted back to Conductor. 3000+ Safety rules and they are expected to know em all. Not a job for someone not willing to crack the books.

Affirmative. Railroad Retirement is way better than SSI,

For no experience needed and starting salary around 60K. If I was young and needed a job with benefits, I would jump at this.

There were 1000 applicants for the last posted openings, 400 actually were invited to the orientation. 100 were selected for personal interviews, and 40 were offered conditional employment. Not easy to even get to the train crew training program.

If someone let's that discourage them, then they didn't deserve it. I would not let that discourage me and I would have been one of the 40. I never backed down when I was younger and only fought harder for things. I still do the same now.
