I know there are quite a few guys here that consistently catch big blues in heavy timber. I am curious what weight class you're using for main-line. Mono or braid? I truly don't want to see a debate about what is best, mono or braid. I'd just like to hear what each toad fishermen personally prefer for getting them turned? This isn't a right or wrong thread. Just a curiosity question! Thanks is advance, Curtis!

I still use 25lb mono for the main line. only thing I may change is leader line to 80lb and change weight style. I see view losing a few fish and rigs as part of the fun and the hunt.

I like 25# main line with a 50# leader. Dont usually break many off especially since I went to medium rods. I try not to horse a fish if it gets hung. Just let it set with a tight line then after awhile loosen it off to slack. Lots of times it will work itself loose.

Thanks for the replies so far! I'm playing with Trilene big game mono @ 30# on the 6500's and 65# Power Pro braid on my 7000c3's. I'm not real used to big fish in timber but am familiar with dragging beasts off structure in the Gulf. I'm not horsing any fish just concerned with fish going around stumps and logs without break-off's. These reels drag strength is nowhere near 65# so just wondering what toad hunters were using. Jlowe? Any line info? thanks

I stick with 25-30lb mono main line and 50lb mono leaders. It definitely has enough strength to pull the big boys away from cover. When I do break off though, it's usually always my main line.

Leader takes more abuse then main line. When they rap up all the strain is on the leader instead of the drag.

If I fished heavy timber primarily, I prob would switch to braid, 80lb. And, I would run 60lb leaders.
We run 30lb mono, 60lb leaders and change leaders weekly.

I like 35 to 50 lb braid depending on what reel and good old Ugly Stik MH rods. Get em up on top quick and let em roll.

30 pound mono with 50 pound mono leader. If you aint won the direction battle soon after hookup in timber, it becomes a battle of finesse to ease em out! My largest kitty had almost spooled a reel in heavy timber before I noticed it. Clicker not set and drag was light. Line was just slowly going out. I got that rascal out of that timber but it took awhile. Just steady pressure and ease em out. Shaller water timber kitty fishin is the best!

We can sit here all day and tell each other what we feel would be the best tackle to use to fight toad blue kitty in their living rooms but the truth is, no matter what we say or do can make a fisherman truly understand and feel comfortable with the tactics needed to pull a monster off it's sofa. To really get it down you have to become one with the Jungle. Lol!!!! You have to sacrafice years of your life and dedicate it to doing nothing but that and trying to find that one fish that will show you how it's done and make you a true believer. If you do it long enough, it will eventually happen but unfortunately you will come home with just a story that most people will say didn't happen. They'll tell you you hooked a huge gar, a monster turtle, a mean flathead or a 10 foot alligator took your kitty cat. If you stop chasing them, you will eventually believe them, but don't do it... Stay the course!!! For when you actually catch a glimpse of the fish that keeps sending you back to kindergarten, then and only then will you change and know what you gotta use and feel comfortable with it for the rest of your life... PRIME...

I was wondering what you guys used in heavy brush. I like 30 lb mono for my handlines, jugs and such. It pulls them right out of the brush. Easy on my hands too.

What ever you do don't use any of that Academy Pro Cat hi-vis green braid. Unless of course you want a green sticky plastic like stuff glued to your eyelets, level wind guide or spinner bail. This stuff may be strong but its pure junk for casting and retrieve. Forget about casting into a wind with a spinner rig too. Not sure what kind of coating is on this line but most of it comes off on your equipment.
