My buddy and I went to Wheeler Branch last weekend in Glen Rose. The small lake is great for kayakers as there are no gas engine boats allowed. The water is extremely clear and deep(up to 85ft). They also have Walleye and smallmouth bass. Give it a try, we had a blast and can't wait to go back!

WB is a favorite for many on the local kayaking forums, that is for sure.
The only negative I can think of is it catches a lot of wind because it sits so high, water being pumped in to the lake. So, a normal windy Texas day is magnified a bit.
One thing that is so cool about the lake is you can fish the whole thing, all major parts in less than a day.
And, it is one of just a few lakes around here that during the summer months, after sitting in a kayak, I'd feel comfortable ending the day with a quick swim. Very clean, both the lake and the park, too.

It is an awesome place to kayak fish.....but I certainly haven't cracked the code on catchin' em. There are obviously a lot of fish in the lake and I usually wind up with a few dinks.

I caught a 3.5lber on a t-rigged creature bait, but besides that I only got one bite. I was really trying to catch Walleye, but I have no clue how to catch them. If anyone has any tips for this lake please let me know

This time of year live bait on or close to the bottom in deeper water.

Wheeler is probably my favorite lake to fish. In the summer big schools stack up on deep offshore structure. Once you find them and they get fired up you can easily have a 30-40 fish day. In the spring before the grass starts growing I like to flip all the cedar bushes. The water has a good oxygen level in it from all the grass so those fish fight hard all the way to the boat.

Michael and others are spot on.
Posted elsewhere, many times, I have seen schools of bass out there that, assuming 1 fish per square foot of water surface, must have held close to a thousand fish. To this, Bill Wilcox of Honey Hole YouTube fame mentioned after his trip out there that LMBs tend to be sight feeders in clear water. I was there the day he shot film and he caught a ton of bass on a top-water among other lures.
So, other than when the bass move up into the shallows in the pre-spawn/spawn/ and a bit of post spawn, I think I have figured WB out a bit. The frisky adolescent bass in the 1 to 2.5 lbs. range school up on that very small lake . . . but it is a lake with really deep water (80 to 85 ft. out off the dam). So, to catch numbers away from the spawn related months, you have to find a school. I am sure there are several of them at any given time but they move around. Then, to this, there will always be the bigger lazier bass all over the lake, these and certainly some non-schoolers. But, if you target these, your numbers won't typically be large.
So, for me, bigger days have been had during either the spawn months, then getting lucky out deep and parking on top of a school.
If you "miss" out there, and many people do, it could give the wrong impression of the lake. It is chock full of LMBs. There is definitely no shortage of fish.
*** Next spawning season, we ought to get a small group and go out there and work the banks. I went out with a friend in my canoe and Scott and I caught fish all the way around the perimeter of the lake. Lizards and worms.

I went out there this morning and ended up catching four in about 3 hours and lost one other. Not much size to them, biggest was about 2.5 pounds. Once the sun got up they all stopped biting.
