This is the year of the snakes for me, two weeks in a row of nearly stepping on a Blotched Water Snake. Pretty cool how the one I saw in Llano had different markings than this one. I'm thinking the different markings/pattern has to do with their diet?

Fairly certain that's a cottonmouth by the way he holds his head.

Looks hungry and mean.
You were lucky to survive to tell about it and post the pic.

It wouldn't move when I walked up on it. Stomped on the downed tree I was on hoping the sound vibration would move it.
Threw stuff on it and it slithered a few feet away into a log pile and just disappeared. I crossed the river and walked up the other bank.
This is what it looked like when I first saw it.

Looks like a Banded Water Snake to me, but I'd tread lightly. What part of Texas are you in?

You guys need to get on the "What kind of snake is this? North Texas" FB group. You'll learn you've probably been wrong on your id's more often than not.
