No Im not. Ive never had to do that with any other TM Ive had. But, Ill definitey do it if it prevents this from happening again.

Our first xi5 did similar to what you describe-- bought in 2015. Called MG and they overnighted a new unit. Not one prob since. Originally unit bought at tackle warehouse and seeing some mild scuff marks here and there, when I look back, I believe someone returned the one we originally bought--with problems.

Installed bluesea master switch dedicated to tm only. Flippingout on the forum recommended so thats what we installed. I absolutely appreciate flippingout for the info. Switch is off when charging batts.

I was able to get it reflashed and it appears to be working again. Ill let yall know the final results once I am able to get the boat on the water. Once again thanks for all of the suggestions!

Maybe I am reading this wrong but the compass calibration is not required UNLESS the pinpoint gps is having a problem. From Motorguide operating manual: COMPASS CALIBRATION IMPORTANT: This calibration is completed at the factory. It should only be repeated if the Pinpoint GPS system is not responding properly. This calibration must be done with the boat in the water, using the primary propulsion engine.
So, if you are having a problem why not try to reset to factory defaults? M+1.1.4 What all would this effect?
From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."
Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

I did the reset to factory defaults and it did not change anything. I am pretty confident that re-flashing the unit is the trick. I'll know more once I get it on the water.

Would be nice if every Xi5 sold included the reflash dongle. Seems this has been a widespread problem for some years now. It would also make sense for MG to include visual indicators in addition to the audible tones for the linking/syncing since most people can't even hear those tones or beeps. I know I can't even when everything is dead quiet around me and the motor not running. That could be a simple firmware update. A series of flashes on the status panel is all it takes for each function.

FYI, the manual for the Xi5 does warn to disconnect the tm when charging the batteries.
