Heading to trade days, what's the best?

And do I need a rooster?

Was gonna start w 4-5 hens

But maybe 4 hens and a rooster

Picked up a small coop yesterday, actually 2 coops. The first flew out the back of the truck and exploded bang

Rhode Island Red varieties for lots of medium brown eggs.
Dominecker (Speckled white & black) for larger brown eggs.
White Leghorns for large white eggs, but they don't live as long.

DO NOT GET A ROOSTER. Not needed and you will regret the noise. In FACT ... ask for all Pullets (female) Likely from Canton you will not get what you ask for, and somebody else's culls (roosters).

We get our from the local feed store. They are fairly reliable.

I'm glad there are wine drinkers in this world ..... it saves more beer for the rest of us.

Rhode Island Red is commonly a best one. No rooster needed unless you have a requirement for fertilized eggs. Check out a website called The Backyard Chicken Farmer.

Generally don’t get a rooster. They will cause problems.

Be prepared to make chicken soup when production slows.

Golden Comet or Golden Buff. Then hopefully they will lay a gold coin that we can get answers about.

Just fyi-
Fertal eggs are not pretty to see when you break open an egg for breakfast, unless you are just wanting more protein-

What has happed to you does not define who you are-

HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

Supposedly if you hold a chick upside down by their feet, roosters will struggle and hens will not. Don't know if it's really true or not, but a buddy did it with ours out of a 50/50 mix at a feed store and we ended up with 15 he s out of 18 chicks.

WORD. My Wife got one mixed in with the chicks a couple years ago and decided to let it hang around. Thing would crow from daylight until dark. It mysteriously disappeared one day. I have no idea what happened. bolt

And I know who "Jeff" is.

Chickens that lay gold coins? Are they worth anything?

Some good sources

http://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/6696133/1/the_CHICKEN_thread

https://www.backyardchickens.com/

I have a mixed flock. No roosters. 15 currently. We do eat a lot of eggs so 15 is good.

For layers, I like Road Island Reds, Ameraucana, Araucana, Dominique, Easter Eggers (EEs), and Orpington. For prettier birds, Sexlinks and Phoenix.
