 Finesse Line Question

Setting up two spinning rigs - 1 for drop shot and 1 for shaky head. I am a McCoy monofilament guy....what # test should I use? Was guessing 8# or 10#.

Yep, U guessed right unless you're in gin clear water. Maybe step down to 6 lb.

10lb for the shaky head and 8lb for the drop shot the shaky head will require more of a hook set and drop shot is normally a lifting smooth motion so no need for anything more the 8lb but make sure you have good drag systems on both reels!

I know you said you are mono guy for line.. but I really like braid for drop shotting. It doesn't have near as much of an issue with line twist vs mono or flouro. Depending on water clarity.. you can use 10lb braid.. which is the diameter of sewing thread almost and 8lb leader.. and it really works nicely.

For my spinning rigs, I use 30# P-line TFC (Teflon Coated Braid)for the main line and 12# P-line CX Premium (mono line with an outer coating of fluorocarbon) for the leader. Works great for me.

spinning reel dropshot set up, 10# powerpro braid with 10# invizx fluorocarbon leader. Seems to work fine for me.

I have one bait cast setup with braid. I have all of my spinning combos with braid.
If you are serious about throwing d-shot and shaky heads then you will want to lose that mono. The line memory will drive you crazy. Add to that the line twist that you will naturally get from those two presentations, you'll eventually want to put that mono nightmare away and never bother getting it out again.
Braid to mono is fine. Braid to fluoro is fine. Mono alone is a fail.

DS Around structure, 15 lb PP braid with 10 lb floro Sunline Shooter leader 15' - 20'
DS in open water, 10 lb PP braid with 8 lb floro Sunline Shooter leader 15' - 20'
Shakey 10 to 12 lb Invisx floro
You need to consider changing to fluorocarbon line.

I use 12# McCoys Mean Green on my shakey head rod and 10# on my drop shot. Sometimes, I fish a shakey head/drop shot combo on 12# test and it works well. McCoys is a thinner diameter than most monos and you can get away with a heavier line, if you want too. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck. And I sometimes use 12# for everything.
