How do you rig a DD 22 for trolling? Do you take the hooks off both and attach a pet spoon and leader to the back?

If you are wanting Big Hybrids/Stripers just troll with the DD22 but it will not run 22ft as you might think. 17ft at best, Use a lighter line(12-15) and extend your length behind the boat to 100-150ft to get the maximum depth. It will work for larger fish and occasional large sandie(TRUST ME)

I would probably just rig it like a hellpet !! But like IBfishing said they wont get down to 22 feet !!

Manns 20+ and 30+ will get down to there desired running depth !! Might want to give them a try, I have 3 of the 20+, and was shocked when it got down to 21 feet !!

I have had problems in the past with the hell pet not staying down right and would surface every 30 second or so. Someone said to try the DD 22's. Any suggestions?

Me and my fishing buddy have had the same problem with using the hellbender as the diving lure !! Thats why we started trying other lures !! So far the Manns + series have done the best !! thumb

One suggestion on the hellpet rig is to use the Heddon Hellbender not a knock off model. The Heddon seems to handle the addition of the pet spoon a little better. I also remove both trebles and attach the spoon to the front hook eye.

I run the hellpet rig on one rod and a DD22 on the other side. Somedays the DD22 is better and somedays the Hellpet rig.

Good luck!

Replace the hooks on the DD-22 ASAP--they are cheap and bend easily. I caught a small redfish(4-5 lbs) on one and all the hooks were mangled. I replaced them with VMC saltwater hooks that I got at Academy and no more problems.

Don't use a hellbender! Use a jetdiver, they are very easy to use and don't drag as much. You better buy them now cause when it gets warm they will sell out fast and stay that way. Academy in Grapevine is where I get mine.

You might try a three-way rig :
* Attach a three way swivel to your main line
* Attach DD-22 to swivel eye 2 using a 5 ft leader
* Attach pet spoon (or other) to swivel eye 3 using a 2.5 ft leader
* Troll fast

I like IBFishing's comments and ensignjason's comments too.

You'll catch many doubles, and it catches whites, hybrids, LMB, and even the occaisional catfish or carp. Some days they hit the bigger bait and some days the smaller bait. You can substitute a sassy shad / jighead for the Pet Spoon as well, or a Mann's for the DD-22 as Brandon972 suggested - - just experiment a bit and have fun.

oh great, now I have to go out and try the mann's
all those systems work but I have never tried the dd22 as the lead in a combo rig- we do troll it alone looking for the occasional big fish but we actually catch the larger fish on the hell pet

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach
