I don't belive anything I hear and only half of what I see.
Back in the day, it was 100%..............they got ate!! Oh yea, we were the same way. If we caught it, it got ate. We also caught a lot more back then

with as many dying as they say it a miracle there is any left . I would be suspect of the numbers . a lot of fish would be saved by cutting off tournaments at 12 o clock in the summer rather than riding stressed fish around in a livewell for 3 more hrs.

I would really like to see how they reach these conclusions.
I have been a three tournaments where biologists were checking fish and health of fish but never once have I seen them put tracking devices on all of the released fish and stayed and tracked them.
I think their numbers are hoey. No way they can know how many die after they swim away without tracking every one released.
I do know that I catch a lot of fish close to recent tournament release sights and also know I have caught a lot of fish with weigh in clip tears in their mouth.
I do not doubt that there is some mortality but there is zero real proof that it is that high.
That said catch weigh and release events are not feasible for 90% of events. Team events especially.
Retirement best job ever.

Back in the day, it was 100%..............they got ate!! You are very correct I'm for saving them all but some are going to die just part of it that's why we need restocking programs for all the lakes not just a few and a lot of cover in our lakes.

they did some studies several years ago in which they would put tournament released fish in baskets suspended under marina docks...Auburn fisheries dept. did this at Eufaula (Al.)and actually hung the cage below the gas dock at the marina....I was there,it was mid summer,hot as hell and you could not have picked a worse place to put a basket of fish...probably the hottest water temps and most polluted water in the entire lake...they did this at Eufaula and several lakes across the southeast and southwest with similar results....
no one will deny that catching,weighing in and releasing bass causes stress to the fish but everybody knows that stressed fish swim to deeper,cooler and more oxygenated water to revive themselves....obviously confining them in a basket instead of releasing the fish is going cause the mortality rates to skyrocket....you would think the biologists would be aware of this....or....they had an anti tournament agenda....

I for one now bass fish almost exclusively to polish my tournament skills. I have also not eaten a bass since I was about 15. I have also never weighed in a dead fish in ten years of fishing Basschamps South. This has included a lot of big fish that were completely healthy when put in the release tank. I don't believe these numbers and have never seen TPWD examining the fish of a well run organization that emphasizes fish care. I will also say that if they force tourneys to go to a photo and release format I will sell my boat and will never bassfish again. I suspect I wouldn't be alone. We can't even agree on the size of a fish a guide caught fishing for stripers. How are we going to agree on the size of a fish with $20,000 on the line.

I agree Brad R. I just spent a year in Massachusetts without my bass boat. I bought a kayak and fished kayak tournaments while I was up there. They used an app called Tourney X where you register for the tournament and upload your catch. It was fairly easy to use after you got used to it. You are also issued an identifier the morning of the tournament that has to also be in the pic. It worked out really well. I did not say that it was "cheater proof". As already noted, when there is money/pride/participation ribbons involved, someone will eventually figure out a way to cheat. I was supporting an alternative to tournament fishing that was previously pointed out based on my experience. However, I understand that cheating must also be considered when debating this topic. It will be interesting to see where the future of tournament fishing ends up. In the meantime, I am going to continue to try do my part to better manage my live well/fish. The hard part for me is catching anything to put in it, which is a completely separate topic!

Yes, fish can die after being caught and put in a livewell for extended periods of time. Fish can die in a cage on mortality studies as well, how are they able to eat/rest/revive in a cage?
IMO the only way to have CWR tournaments is if it is a pro-am, or boater/non-boater blind draw, or you need a marshall/judge or neutral party in the boat. At local Levels you could try and use HS fishing team members to be the weighmaster on the boat, it could be a learning experience for them.
Anything that rules out the potential of cheating at the local level.

Bass anglers are historically protective of the species and sport, will buy the newest greatest gadgets/clothes that come out every year. Yet, extremely reluctant to try tweaking some things to reduce mortality
