My house has a flat commercial type roof because it was originally the sales office for the subdivision. Since the hailstorms plowed through this spring, it's become necessary to replace it.

I said to myself, "Self, since you're going to spend money replacing the roof anyways, why not spend a little more and have framing done to install a pitched roof?". Myself responded, "Hello me, it's me again. Let's call some contractor type people to find out how much this will cost."

Got the numbers. $88,600 to tear down the existing roof, frame, and install a pitched shingle roof.

I'm calling our commercial roofer to install a new flat roof again. Even with me, myself, and I working overtime, I'm not spending that kind of money.

At that price it probably has tires on the roof.

What color is the tarp? And will he trade it for a horse?

They make some stuff now (can't remember the name) that sprays on flat roofs and does a great job of sealing and lasts forever. We did our entire hospital in it a couple of years ago and its been great.

It's about 2,700 square feet, with a 'Mansard' style siding around the roof edges (I think that's what it's called).

I'm a smart fella in many fields, including mathematics, history, descriptive astronomy, oceanography, accounting, taxes, etc., etc. But what I know about construction could fill a couple of postcards, so I rely on the advice of the people I normally deal with. One of them confirmed that the cost is about right.

How much for a retractable roof. That would be cool.
