What is the recommended time of usage of fly line before it needs to be changed?

Depends on the line, and how well you care for it. Don't stand on it, clean it, etc., and it'll last a lot longer than it would otherwise.

Airflo lines last FOREVER, that I know from experience. Apparently leaving the PVC out of the mix is a game changer when it comes to longevity.

If you believe their marketing hype (I have no idea if it is true or not), SA lines outlast their closest competitors by 800%.

That said, you should be able to get a couple seasons out of one at least, but you could potentially get much more than that.

You'll know when it's time. It'll shoot horribly, it'll take on water - you'll know.

And I forgot the most important part...it completely depends on how often you use the line. If it's the only line you throw, and you fish 200 days a year, it's going to wear out on you.

You can tell. When it stops shooting well and/or starts to sink constantly try cleaning it -- soap, warm water, paper towels -- if that doesn't work, time for a new line. Mine lasted about a year, but I fish 3-4 days a week in the afternoon, and drag the line around on rocks and grass while doing so (which is bad, obviously).

Probably depends on where, what, etc. I fish muddy places and some lines like Rio tropical lines seem to absorb mud that can't be cleaned out. Eventually, it makes the line prone to tangles.

Airflo line resists mud and dirt better than Rio. I keep line a long time. The only issue I have had with line is the mud particles getting into Rio line.

I learned that lesson the hard way. I fished in those sandy creeks during the white bass season and that fly line lasted all of 3 months bang

I tried carrying some of those armor all wipes with me to clean my fly line this season but it seemed to make the fly line brittle like it used to do on the dash of my old chevy pickup.

Do y'all carry anything to clean your line with you? Other than soap and water?

Soap and water works really well followed by line treatment that is designed for fly lines. The stuff designed for fly lines is not that expensive compared to the cost of a fly line and a tube seems to last forever. So, why not use it?

When it comes to soap I avoid dish washing soaps that are designed to remove grease. Think about it, we paid a lot of money for those special coatings that are added to fly lines. Why take a chance with something that could remove those coatings? Mild hand washing soaps work fine to clean fly lines.

I think the biggest problem most of us have is not cleaning our lines often enough.

I use Loon line speed to clean the line, then if line is damaged in anyway i use Silicone Mucilin. .

I use the Rio agent x line cleaning kit after every 3rd fresh water trip and every salt water.

Curious, does treating the line help it to last longer? Does it help from picking up sand or other particulates?

I do it as a preventative measure. My 7 weight Orvis bass line is over a year old and it has been heavily fished. It gets drug around stock pond banks regularly and it still shoots and floats. Really don't have anything to compare it to though.

In late March, I switched out my lines after having it on my reel since March 2012. However, my rods, reels, and fly line get a shower after each use, and I don't drag, "roll," or beat up my lines. I do fish structured areas, so they do hang-up on Mother Nature. I don't use soap, just water and a microfiber towel really get the line clean for me. My 8# line was a Rio WF8F Bonefishing line that I used everywhere--salt, fresh, warm, cold. I replaced it with its 2017 version. I then bought a cold water Orvis line for a trip in August, so I'll see how switching out lines while switching environments adds to a line's longevity. I do fish about half the year, maybe a little bit more.

I skipped to the end, but there is a difference between "soap," and "detergent." I think you want detergent and not soap?
