Actually Perry we lived in Frisco and then Dallas but there was no lake too far too drive for fishing. He would drive to Mexico with relatives to fish Don Martin lake but wouldn't let me go because I was too young and it wasn't real safe even back then. My brother and I would be siting in the boat when he came home from work on Friday and he couldn't refuse taking us fishing. My dad was the greatest at teaching us to fish and hunt. Miss him every day.

I am a Senager. (Senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 50 years later. I get an allowance every month. I have PU truck and a bass boat, I am blessed.

I too remember those good Ole days when my dad would take me fishing and he had an old aluminum Jon boat probably a 12 footer,(as a young kid it seemed bigger)but those were great times. We would always stop by the old country store and he would get saltine crackers and a big chunk of block cheese or balogna and we always carried a yellow cooler that had a lid that 2nd'ed as a cup and it was always full of ice water. When it came to bassfishing, the main 2 lures he used was a tiny torpedo and a green creme worm and the reels were Mitchell&Garcia 300 spinning reels. Those were the days.

And yes I also remember Virgin Ward and his aquarium demos. But do you remember Marlin Perkins and Mutual of Omaha wild kingdom or Juac Custeaus and his 1st mate Falco? I just dated myself.

Of course. They ran about the same time. "I'll sit in the helicopter while Jim wrestles with the alligator!"

I remember Jim having to bail Marlin out about every other week. That old coot bit more off than he can chew more than once.

I haven't seen the old Fliptail worms mentioned yet. The bass we caught on those. I remember a trip to Lake Novillo in Mexico and going through a bushel basket of purple and root beer Fliptail worms. I still have a few left, along with all the other tackle, rods, and reels that my father managed to collect over the years.

Good times. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

I posted the one below on May 1, 2014. It still holds true:

Now that our water temps are finally getting almost warm enough for topwater fishing, I thought I'd pass on a tip that I discovered 38 years ago. I learned this by experimenting in the clear lakes in eastern Washington, but they work in clear water here, as well. This involves a modification of the old H&H safety pin spinner. (Those are over a dollar now at BPS, but I used to buy them for 29 cents!)

I take off the skirt and throw it away, (I keep the rubber tubing for trailer hooks) replacing it with a purple rubber skirt and putting the double hook back on, making sure it faces up. I bend open the blade wire just a little, and then remove and throw away the swivel and blade(s). I replace them with a ball bearing swivel and a hammered, copper willow leaf blade. I then bend the wire closed and usually add a drop of solder to ensure that it doesn't come apart.

I "wake" this purple/copper lure only in clear water and in low light - early, late, and on overcast days - by reeling it just below the surface, fast enough to throw a good wake, but slowly enough that it doesn't break through the surface. This isn't difficult with a medium or medium-heavy, fast action spinning rod and 12-pound mono on a good reel. I use original Stren for this.

My largest fish on this lure is a 7-15 from Newman Lake, Washington, which I caught waking the lure parallel to the outer lily pad line early in the morning on a cloudy day.

I've had a lot of success using a similar lure - but with a hammered nickel blade and either a chartreuse/blue or a yellow/black skirt when it's sunny. No PB on this rig, but some really nice bass on it - and you can often see the bass coming to hit it. Again, my best results were waking parallel to outer weed lines. The technique does work best in very clear water. I can't wait to try it at Squaw Creek.

Oh - purple skirts are difficult to find. I buy mine online from Brannan's Bass Shop in Powderly, Texas (http://www.brannansbass.com/; you can email them at brannans@1starnet.com). I almost always trim the skirts short and put them on the spinnerbait backwards.

Try this - you might be pleasantly surprised, so keep a tight grip on your rod! Good luck!

Tom

Don't think I've ever caught anything in a lake though. Getting into real fishing in the past year, that was the hardest thing to accept... There are MORE baits than H&Hs!!! Literally all I had as a kid.

Some good lures mentioned here. I used most of them. I also thought of another one last night - remember the old Shadrack? It was a surface lure that floated at an angle, and had one prop just ahead of the rear treble. Loved that bait.

I remember when we had a flasher fish finder in that old boat. Can't even remember who made it. I think Lowrance. You had a dial that adjusted the gain and when you went fast, it couldn't keep up so it just showed flashes everywhere. You were lucky to see where the bottom was.

I always assumed that the humming sound of those old super 60 flashers is what ended up providing the name for Humminbird Electronics. Ran a million miles looking at one, and in many ways, a good flasher still does a great job on deep grass. Just nobody runs them anymore.

I miss the days when my dad would take me to TC Halls sporting goods in Dallas. I still remember saving my allowance and buying white H & H spinnerbaits. We would go to Lake Tawakoni back when most of the coves had large fields of coontail moss.

A flasher will probably be the next add for my boat, Dave lefbre had an interesting video on w2f a while back about how he still uses one and the benefits. And yes a yellow and blk H&h is a fish catching machine even today. Growing up in south Louisiana we always threw a brown and orange and the blk and yellow.
