Amen on the wake boat.

When I was a kid we threw three things...an H&H, a Reflecto "Barracuda" spoon, and a purple worm. I say purple because that was the only color we had.

There was no such thing as C-rigs , d-shots , wacky rigs .....
and the only line I used was that blue colored Stren

He would have us use minnows to catch the fish and I will never forget when we would run out of minnows he would take the pull tab off of a drink and wrap it around a hook. We would throw it out and reel it back in and that darting, flashing put together lure would still catch fish on our Ted Williams rod and reel combos.

wow, the first chatterbait!

Wow, this is a trip down memory lane for sure. I grew up fishing the three ponds behind our house. One of them was large enough to qualify as a "lake" to me as it was 3-4 acres.

My first lure was a Hawaiian Wiggler and then a Bomber crank bait. My grandfather favored Heddon River Runts and Smithwick Devil's Horse but preferred a minnow and pole as did my grandmother.

As I got older and fished with friends, we used the black and yellow H&H although we called it "black and gold"-always did and still do...We could get them at Gibson's and sometimes 3 for a $ 1.00 when they were on sale.

I too remember Virgil Ward and the
Beetle Spins -demoed in his aquarium. Those beetle spins are still "meat lures"-everyone should have a couple.

I can vaguely remember Gadabout Gaddis who predates even Virgil Ward!

I also fished the Tiny Torpedo and the Skipjack-two good topwaters.

I tried the crme scoundrel-purple as already noted-but without success. I remember the Mann's Jelly worms sold in a pack of 3 or 4 and they smelled really good. Never tried them because I still had scoundrels that didn't work! lol

Try as I might, I was a teenager before I ever learned to fish the plastic worm so most of my time was spent chunking the Tiny Torpedos- still have several.

thanks again for such a great topic.

I'm 25 years old and I have thrown h&h's since I was about 8 or 9. I still throw them on the regular! I turned a slow morning on fork into a productive one with a yellow h&h just a few weeks ago. Still a great lure

I fished a Texoma Bass Club tournament in early seventies and the guy I was with missed 3 or 4 fish in a short time. He had not put the hooks on the bait. Also fished Hellbender and Bayou Boogies.

I miss the good 'ol days fishing with my dad. Every time a new lake would open we would be one of the first ones there and those new lakes didn't get any better. I'll never forget when we first arrived at Rayburn. I saw for the first time bass schooling and the school was so big you couldn't throw a lure across it. We didn't have a trolling motor so when we got to the Black Forest we had to paddle through it because the trees and hydrilla was so thick. Also miss the days when a 50hp outboard was big.

I am a Senager. (Senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 50 years later. I get an allowance every month. I have PU truck and a bass boat, I am blessed.

Wow, good memories for me, too. I was fishing H&H spinners, Beetle spins, Heddon chuggers, Lucky 13's, etc. in the late '50's and forward. All on spinning reels - those baitcasters were for cat fishermen! My favorite bait in that era was a tiny topwater bait called a Creek Chub Darter. I still have that old bait in my tackle box today.

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

How's this since H&H's have stirred so many memories for all of us. My dad got back from Vietnam and all he wanted to do was buy a bass boat. It was a 14' Ouachita with 2 seats and stick steering. Throttle on the right hand side and a stick on the left. Kind of like our new modern aircraft except you moved that stick almost thru 180 degrees to go full right to full left. It had a Johnson 25hp with electric start so we were really big time! I also remember when the newest bass boat, a Power Cat(?), came onto the market and had a motor that was a four stroke which was unheard of in those days. Can't remember the name of the outboard.

I was also a Garcia Mitchell 300 & 308 spinning reel and Garcia Conolon rods. I felt like I could outfish Virgil Ward and take over his show.

Wow, Aggie, I certainly envy you being raised by a dad who #1,loved to bass fish, (in stead of the perch jerkers in my family) and #2, you lived within range of Sam Rayburn when it was still a young lake. Paddling through the hydrilla in the Black Forrest .... awesome! What a way to get the love of bass fishing branded in your azz.

Memory lane...My granddad taught me how to bass fish in the early 1960s. 1st artificial was a shyster...would catch anything. Graduated to H&H spinners and little big Os early 70s. I watched him fish a South Bend Optic SLOWLY off the bottom and catch bass consistently. Recently got into old fishing stuff from 50s & 60s era in his memory.(see photos)
