Anybody have tips about fishing subdivision canals in Galveston this time of year?
I will be staying in Hitchcock, TX all next week and needs fishing tips.

THANKS for any replies as I mainly fish fresh water .... heard the crabbing is good in the canals.

Depending on your location, some of those canals hold anything and everything. if you are stationary, shrimp on a hook with no weight is a good plan. Also a topwater walked back to the boat can do well too.

I've been known to drive to the end of a street in Bayou Vista, park, and fish the canal that runs parallel to the RR tracks with no one bothering me..BTW, it was high tide there too

So far I caught a nice flounder, a red a few ladyfish and about 3 million catfish ...... I hate catfish!!!

Do you have a kayak or boat or anything like that. Fish arround the lights at night in the canals and it will be much better.

Use small shad style baits or mullet imitations for slightly larger fish. Pic apart each light.. cast the edge, cast where the low light goes to almost black, cast into any shadows and cast right across the top of the light. One last way is to work the bottom around the lights and that's normally where you'll catch a few reds as well.

If the cats your catching have a long streamlined fin on top then they are gaftop sail catfish.. I know, it's a let down to catch them when targeting trout and reds, but in all they are decent eating. The little dark ones are not.

When I am in Galveston I fish the canal lights at night. I always use a 3" white swim bait That looks like a small mullet. I always do very well catching specks and red fish. If I find a small drop off near a light I will let the swim bait sink to bottom and work it slowly across the drop off. I can usually pick up a few flounder doing that.

Yes, small lipped crankbaits jerked erraticly can be very good in the lights for sure. During the day time use a small topwater and work the edges of the canals.

A lot of floodwater coming to Galveston bay in a hurry... South shoreline canals might be the only fishable water after a week or two of this flood water getting to the bay. Big Push from many directions.

Not sure how this rain will affect the canals but all things being equal at night the canals can be very good, especially for numbers, maybe not always size. I've found that during the day it's not usually great (West Bay canals). At night if you kayak or boat up and down them you'll see shark, alligator gar, tons of specks, reds and of course catfish. If the catfish are taking your live bait, or if the bite is finicky, try a "speck rig" or as us freshwater guys call it a double crappie rig. Last time I was there this summer they wouldn't bite anything bigger than a 1/8th oz crappie jig with white or glow jigs. But we caught a ton, mainly small but some keepers too. Get ready to stay up all night though because it's not good until probably 11pm. If you are stationary and think you are close to some flats were some reds are, throw out a bottom rig with a 3oz with with a small leader about 12-18" up with "Fish Bites", only thing we could catch reds on when they were slow. If they're biting, shrimp, shad, etc will always work too. Good luck!
