We were coming back from vacation and had to land in Atlanta before the last leg to DFW. Approach was normal, gear down, flaps, dropping in altitude. On final approach the plane makes several left to right rough jerks and then a sudden drop like a down burst hit it.
We were within 50 ft. of landing from my calculations looking out the window. All of a sudden the pilot hits the throttle and upward we head. Circle around and make a second approach with less turbulence, land without any issues.
My question is, if the pilots have to make a second approach to land after being that close to landing initially, are they questioned by the FAA?
I shook both their hands and told them good call as we left the plane. They didn't look very happy, like they were in trouble.

Could have been wake turbulence, weather related, who knows. Go around's will raise questions with the Airline, and yes, they will more than likely be questioned by their employer. I do know a couple of freight companies that give the pilot very few go around's per year before they get reprimanded. As far as the FAA, unless they broke a regulation or had a close call, they will probably never say a word.

Some planes are so cramped that passengers suffer jet leg.

I do believe they have to fill out a report for any go-around.

I had a pilot try 3 times to land in fog in Savannah a few years back. I was Giving loud yeppies and ye haws (was not appreciatted by rest of the plane) as my buddy and I were so drunk we were asked to stay on the plane till everyone else got off and they made sure we had a ride (we did). Buddy passed out on luggage deal and it turned on so round and round he went.

In my pervious job my office was in the approach/landing pattern of the Easternmost runway at D/FW. The window looking North was right behind my cube. One afternoon I just happened to turn around and see a jumbo suddenly pull up and veer hard left. I let out an 'OH S&$#' louder than I thought because several other people looked up and saw what I did and knew it wasn't normal. We got a better look at the undercarriage of that plane than we wanted. Never did find out what happened.

Not a pilot, but developed a small fear of flying after a bad flight coming home from Vegas. In an attempt to get over it (successful btw) I read a book called Soar. If memory serves me this is usually caused by the runway not being cleared as expected and it somewhat common.

I'd much rather experience an aborted landing than an aborted take-off.

I'd much rather experience an aborted landing than an aborted take-off. My brother recently had that happen when flying on his company's private jet. The pilot forgot to take the cover off the air speed sensor during pre-flight. Got about half way down the runway and shut everything down and stood on the brakes. He apologized to the guys on the plane and jumped out and removed the cover real quick. As they were getting back in line to take off again, my brother asked if he couldn't see the speed, how did he know he had room to stop? Pilot just grinned and shook his head.
