Funny you ask. My Father called my nieces and nephews"little doodle bugs".

I didn't know anybody else had ever heard that term.

It was definitely used as a term of endearment. Like "sweetie" might be used.

Pops, and all of his side of the family a are from Kentucky.

Clearly he had heard the term Doodlebug and in some way he heard it used as a term of endearment for youngsters.

You would be amazed at the things we can argue about. But it's all while laughing at ourselves.

Roly polies are different than doodle bugs. I grew up with the Doodle bug rhyme and he'd never heard it before. But I'm wondering if it's more of a generation gap than a regional thing. I was just raised by older people and slightly more country.

My dad taught me that when I was little. When you found a bunch of ant lion pits in a group and wanted to see if any were in there, you would get a very small stick or piece of straw - about the size of a toothpick - and stir the pit with it while saying "doodle bug, doodle bug, come and get your cornbread". Then you would stop and see if it would kick up the dirt, and that's how you knew he was in there.
