For unpaid student loans? A family member defaulted on his loan and he says they have now started to garnish his paycheck. I've never heard of this so I'm a little skeptical.

Up to 15% of your take home pay if the creditor owns loans backed by the fed.

Had a guy lose his licensing from the state for unpaid student loans, fed loans, he dodged payments for over a year, all he did was whine about it, just shook my head and showed him the door. Kid could not understand the responsibility he signed up for.
I will be back. I'm never truly gone.....Last post by Brad RIP

The problem is these people paying on their loans for 10 years and not a dime goes to principal. 5% no payments till you graduate adds up quick for the 7 year Texas Tech Doctorate degree.

I think more education needs to be given when taking out a student loan. I used them, but only for books and tuition and had a job to pay for living expenses and fun money. I saw SEVERAL people using them for everyday expenses including going out to eat and bars. I even knew one guy who took vacations with them. When all was said and done I was able to pay mine off in 8 years not paying much more than the min payment and deferring them for 6 months twice.

This is what my sister in laws brother did. He went to Oregon State for 7 years and because of his parents situation he got awesome student loan packages. He paid for school, housing, a car, vacations, etc for those 7 years with them and didn't have to start paying a cent until he was out of school. Too bad the hippy didn't come out with a degree.

I call bs . My wife went to school on a pale grant I beileve and while attending school she figured out she could pull loans out. Hers was about 10k . Shortly after she quit school and never paid the loan off . Fast foward to today and we are trying to get it worked out on a payment plan. Because they can take your taxes and stuff like that but I don't ever recall anything about garnished wages . And if you start paying them it doesn't matter how much at a time they don't take your taxes and harass you and all the other stuff. there is a minimum tho think hers was like 25 dollars a month . So I assume it was a certain percentage of the 10 grand.
