So I went out to the barn looking for an extra pole to get ready for tonight and I found two yellow jacket hives. I sprayed them down and as I was throwing them away I remembered that my father told me that the larva made great bait. I brought the hives in the house and I spent close to an hour picking larva out. Was it a waste of time? Or do y'all think they could trigger a bite? I was thinking of tipping a hand tied jig with one just to see.

Just wondering if all the wasp spray will taint the larva and keep the crappie from biting?

I was worried about that as well. They are on their thorn bath now.

I'm not sure. I just know that I wouldn't eat one.

I used to knock the nests down with dirt clods, and then take the larva. I'll guarantee you that triggered a lot of bites.

Larvae are good eating.

No thanks. One of them little demonic bastages stung me on the ring finger last week. I forgot how much that hurt. I hate them. They got a good dose of spray and a good stomping when they hit the ground.

When I was a kid and it was too hot to dig up worms, a BB gun and a yellow jacket nest was all I needed to get bait. Shoot the nest down, swat the wasps with a badminton racket, killing them, and digging out the larvae. 5 mile creek cats, sunfish and bass loved em! Never caught any crappie on em. Had to go down to the bait shop on the corner of Simpson Stuart and US 75, sell enough pop bottles to scrape up 25 cents for a dozen minnows. The crappie would devour em!

That's usually done with honeybee venom, not wasp venom. Wasp venom has different components and is much more potent than honeybee venom. I was a beekeeper for a few years when I lived in a place where I could have them. Just gotta make sure you aren't allergic to the stuff or you won't feel too many thumps at all after anaphylactic shock.

Fastest way to get rid of the sting of a wasp.
Find some wet mud and smear it over the affected area and let it dry wait for a hour and wash of the mud
The mud will pull the sting out some how
