I have a 2003 Yamaha vmax 150 with a tick/ knock checked compression it's 105 ,105,95,110,105,90 any suggestions

What's a rebuild cost these days ?

Texas Outboard Motor rebuilders doesnt rebuild Yamaha HPDI's or SHO's anymore. However they may still rebuild older ProV's. DEFINATELY a top quality rebuilder. Its worth a call to find out. Last year when I was talking to them I asked why. They said its a YAMAHA issue & they just decided not to due to high failure rates on rebuilds NOT due to rebuild mistakes. They can explain it in detail to you. There is an ongoing disagreement on Boats & Motors right now about a twice rebuilt Yamaha failing after 2 consecutive rebuilds.
Another top quality rebuilder of Yamahas is Hydro Tech I've heard. I dont have their # or link but thats easily googled.

I don't know if the motor is really hard bad that's not that bad of compression is it

You did the RIGHT thing when you started hearing that knock/tick!!! Probably prevented yourself a lot more damage. You STILL have a rebuildable block. Do youraelf a favor & research rebuild costs, & check into Hydro Techs pricing. Not saying a good mechanic isn't available locally or in Texas.
As far as compression #'s its still fair, but that tick means more at this point. Could be a ring starting to hang in a port, a wrist pin bearing starting to fail, a rod/crank bearing starting to fail, or a crank journal bearing starting to fail. Could even be a piece of reed material riding on top of a piston. Whatever it is, its serious enough to look into BEFORE running it anymore.

I want to say that I can empathize with your situation and I hope it works out for you. I recently went through the mechanic selection when my 2006 HPDI blew Cylinder 1 and researched many options, before I made my selection on mechanic. I also contacted Texas Outboard Motor Rebuilders and they did inform me they stopped doing HPDI rebuilds. What I discovered, was most mechanics I spoke with were offering 3-6 months warranty on their work. I was very close to selecting Hydro Tec and had multiple conversations with them. They were very pleasant and customer oriented; answered all my questions. I had reservations on making the 13-14 hour drive to Missouri from San Antonio, so I made another selection, which offered me a One year warranty like Hydro Tec. Unfortunately, my rebuild experience did not work out for me and after two unsuccessful rebuilds, I decided to purchase a new in box 2016 Yamaha SHO. Looking back at it retrospectively, and if I could do it over again for the rebuild, I would have made the drive to have Hydro Tec do it. I have been informed by many that Hydro Tec does the rebuilds for Yamaha.

My last discussion with them was in August 2016. From my recollection, the rebuild was going to be around $5800, if your block was in good shape and could be credited as a core charge. Hope I worded that right. The great thing is you have to give them about 3 weeks lead time, so they can prepare your remanufactured power head and schedule a day for drop off. If you drop off your boat on Monday morning, it will be ready next day with the break in complete. They have a Dyno machine and they go through your entire motor. I researched a new powerhead from Yamaha, and at the time it was around 8K with a one year warranty as well.

I wish you much luck in finding the optimal solution to your situation. If you are like me, being on my boat is my sanctuary and allows me to decompress, so when I was without it, it made me realize how much I value having it operational.

The Pro-V is a very different motor than an HPDI. The Pro-V has an excellent reliability record and would probably be worth the rebuild cost if it is in otherwise good condition. I would call the folks in Gun Barrel before going across the country.

SA210CHAMP, I certainly wish yours would have had a better outcome also. Sometimes we have to take the bad hands we are dealt & make the best of it.I wish there were a 100% surefire way , but they ARE machines & even with perfect workmanship, they CAN & will fail sometimes. I'm suspicious of the brand of pistons used in your rebuild.My mechanic will NOT use Wiseco pistons,but that comes from years of building high performance screaming motors. They are cheaper, but sometimes thats NOT the best option. Thats another reason HydroTech rebuilds are $1300 higher. Wiseco has been around a long time & I remember they used to make a good piston for my motocross bikes. But that was 40 years ago also. This comes from my personal experience. Your compression isn't TERRIBLE... I would make sure you even need a rebuild first.

Definitely this. That Pro-V is the best motor I've run and I'm still running it 21 years later. It's a tank.

I'm having trouble with the 2500 rpm limit, but you can fix just about anything on this motor for under 500 bucks even if it's something seriously bad.

That small knock or tick is something to consider seriously though. HOPEFULLY its a simple fix & NOT a rebuild. Its feasible its some kind of foreign material on top of a piston. But.... what would it be & where would it have come from. A set of head gaakets is cheap at least to take a peek. It'll let you see any grooving or scoring of cylinder walls above pistons also.

Agree. Of course don't run it again and get it checked.
