While a compression check is better than nothing, a leakdown test is the most accurate way to determine an engines condition.
Records are good, IF they can be verified.

If you're in DFW give Ronnie at Xtreme Marine a call. I bet he'd do it for you pretty quick. He is in Grand Prairie.
Or, again, if you're in DFW, ill let you use my compression tester.

Call Marine Outlet in Temple 254-773-9931. Ask for Rick Smith (owner). Let him know your situation. Pretty sure he will help you out. T Bird for the win!!! Man, thanks for referring Rick. He called me back and said he could get me in on Thursday when I go take a look at the boat. Thanks a bunch! de nada

And it is the best way to check a motor Well, can a leak down test be easily performed in one's garage? I have seen a couple videos but they were all performed on old outboards or 2 strokes. I'm not engine savvy but I assume a modern 4 stroke outboard will look quite a bit different...?

I've yet to experience a good compression/fail leak down test and the motor not run fine. Just say'in.

Don't over complicate it. Check compression, lower unit oil. Then go run it hard. If it runs fine, buy it. That's a fairly new boat. Exactly When I buy used boats I tell the seller straight up I am a serious buyer and I am gonna seriously run and go through that boat. They need to be prepared to be on the water for one to two hours. If their not then I am not interested.

Compression test can easily be done by yourself. Let thenmotor run for 15 mins, take out all the spark plugs, and screw on the compression gauge to each hole

I wouldn't buy one without a good thorough inspection period.
*BTW, Marineland in Waco's service department is a joke, I wouldn't trust a word they say. They are a yamaha place anyways, specialty marine next door is the merc place in town, or you might check with prikyl marine behind lake waco dam.

Bought it! However, insurance needs to do a survey on the boat. I'll be picking it up in Waco on Saturday most likely.
If you can't find em wind em.

I am a Senager. (Senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 50 years later. I get an allowance every month. I have PU truck and a bass boat, I am blessed. Conscience never acquits, it either accuses or excuses.
