Remember the two 14 year old Florida boys who went ocean fishing in a 19-foot, single engine boat and were lost at sea? They found the capsized boat a few days later but never recovered the bodies of the young men. The mother of one of the teens is suing the divorced mom and dad of the other teen whose boat the boys went out in. She is claiming the parents didn't provide adequate supervision and that led to them going out to sea in a boat that was woefully inadequate (single engine, no radio, no locator beacon, etc). Tragic story all around, but the lawsuit adds another dimension altogether, one that speaks to a parent's obligation to provide adequate oversight on their teens actions. Thoughts?

She's mad and looking to get paid. I think the lawsuit is ridiculous.

I don't think I would sue, but I don't have kids and haven't had my kids die at sea.

Did she ensure that her son was going to be supervised properly while hanging out with his friend?

Yep, the loss of a child is a heavy blow, the worst I believe. I'm sure she struggles with the situation daily. I don't know the ins and outs and I question the lawyer who is taking her down this path.

Only one who "wins" is the lawyers. Sad situation all the way around.

Terrible deal. My oldest is 14. I'm around a lot of 14 year olds. They are capable of some amazing things at that age, and they are also capable of some really poor judgement.

had a friend years ago lose a son....the son and several other 10-12 year old boys walked out on a frozen pond on a farm near where they lived...the ice broke and the young boy drowned....
my friend told me later that he had several law firms contact him trying to get him to sue the farmer....he told them the farmer did nothing to cause his sons death and he had no interest whatsoever in profiting from his son's death....
