Looking to fill my saltwater sight fishing void with sight fishing for carp here in the hill country. Do carp regularly feed in the shallows when it's this hot? I'll be fishing rivers only, so i was hoping the cooler water would make them more active.

I can't speak for rivers but for lakes, yes they do. Some mornings I'll be surrounded by feeding carp any where from 4-10 ft. Especially on Lake Conroe. I'm in a boat so it makes it easier to get around.

I've caught carp wading in water that was so hot it was uncomfortable to wade in. The downside to it (besides the obvious) is that the fish don't fight very much. Not enough oxygen. But it is doable. As far as rivers go, if the water is moving its probably cool enough to catch some reasonably good fighting fish. Go get 'em...

Really any small, buggy looking fly will work most of the time. The BackStabber is a very popular pattern. Small crayfish imitations work well. I've caught a lot of carp on Bonefish patterns that I tie in more earth tone colors (olive, brown, tan) with just a hint of crystal flash. Root beer seems to be a good color also.

its not as important what you throw as that you land it in about a 10" paper plate size area in front of there face. They are inquisitive fish and will come investigate anything they see drop. I once just put a single red bead on a hook and caught 4 fish while sight fishing.

anyone else seen carp feeding lately in this 100 degree heat?

yep. early and late and watch the shady areas.

early and late its not 100 degrees... i ask about the heat because i plan to fish all day.

Me and a buddy of mine boated five on the flats between 9:30 and 1:00. The last fish we caught was at 12:45 - had to leave at 1:00 to get to work. There were still plenty of fish out there.

I use a red/orange carp crack, yellow fish egg puff, and a fly that looks like a small piece of white bread. Always have two rods on the deck ready with one or the other.

And a can of sweet corn thrown about to get things going. Catfish like the corn as well.

carp were everywhere.. but extremely lazy.. only moved 1.

Bass were hot.
