Hello all, I am an avid fisherman new to Texas and have a question for wade fisherman. I have been doing really well at Sabine and stayed out pretty late last weekend wading (6-3) because of the full moon. I do not have a boat here but caught some pretty goof fish. I generally only fish till 11-12 and know that trout die on the stringer but this time due to the heat when i went to clean the 10 fish i had they all went bad. Having run a seafood restaurant for years i know the sooner to the ice the better but does anyone have a good solution to this and if not, how long is generally too long for them to be in the water?

Once they die, it would buy you some time if you gutted and gilled them.

Way back in the day we rigged up a small cooler with floats and put em on ice this time of year. It worked!

I wade fish a LOT !!!
And have done so for a longggggggggggggggg time.
When you string your trout, be as gentle with them as you would a small trout you released to get bigger and spawn along the way.
It's a small thing that helps in a big way when you are wading fishing.
However, wade fishing over 3 hrs. at a time like you are talking about this time of year it's tough to keep'em "fresh" when they've been dead on a stringer for 3 - 5 hrs in SaltH2O temps. that have been ranging from 85 - 90 range the past few days.
CURRENT: TEXAS SaltH2O Temps in
I wrote a book about: WadeFish Rockport
Wade fishing all my life in Rockport is what led to my success at a few fishing things from guiding to lure manufacturing - but - wade fishing was and still is the foundation of my angling endeavors.
When I was younger, when my trout location was done - I'd go put'em on ice.
Then, .. I'd go to my redfish hole and string some reds.
You can do the same thing with a CAR that ya can do with a BOAT and a heck of a lot quicker if going from 1 bay to another.
There are 17 wadefish locations in my book and, yeah .. I have fished a couple of locations in 1 day to get a limit of 10 trout and 3 reds, like you could until a few years ago, .. now it's 5 and 3 respectively.
It's just so much FUN to be in the water where the fish are when ya catch'em ... no matter whether you are 6 years or 60 years old !!!
And, like I always say:
"Fishing is fun, ... but 'catching' is more FUN !!!"

Maybe you could try to bring some ice to make it fresh longer time.Especially for the so hot summer.

Practice catch and release or just keep a few at the end of your session. When I wade the surf and I am keeping fish, I walk each fish up to a cooler waiting with ice in it. They go on the ice still alive. Same thing in the kayak or boat, I throw them on ice right away. And there is nothing wrong with not keeping a limit even though you caught a limit or beyond. No one will miss your particular photo of the full stringer as there are hundreds of more like it on every fishing related social media site. You will still know that you caught your limit even if there is no photo proof of the event.
They do make net stringers that the fish go in alive and the device has a net secured to a float at the top. It has a draw string to close and open the top to put in fish and keep them there. The fish might do better staying alive in something like that.
Keep as much as the law allows if you want. I feel like I've killed enough fish over the years so that I'm pretty careful about taking only enough for my immediate needs and then I focus on keeping what I take in good condition. The law does demand people don't waste game, but based on what I've seen many people violate this law just so they can have the chest pounding photo at the end of day.
