Hacked...what to do next.

I checked my email this morning to find folks responding to messages I did not send. Went to the site in question. Found a name, not my own, on my account.

Called vendor. Cancelled the account.
Dumped the cache
Hard reset on the computer
Called card companies...had cards cancelled/reissued
Checked with banks...no suspicious activity

What else should I do?

Wow, what an interruption to your life. Damn POS hackers.
I'm guessing use new usernames and new passwords for all your accounts would be a good idea.
What a PIA that all has to be!!!

I would be sure you have a functional/paid up subscription to a good antivirus package and that you have applied all your operating system patches. Run a full scan on your PC with your anti-virus software. Best of luck.

You weren't necessarily hacked, they may have just spoofed the name and return address to look like yours. Easily done and happens regularly. Just wait until you start getting spam from yourself!

Good point and yes it happens fairly often.

Pilothawk, now that i think about it, a good working firewall and up to date AV should keep them out of your hard drive and away from your data even if they had spoofed your email address - at least i think it would but I'm no techy person.

I can't tell you how many times I've received emails that weren't sent by the actual name of the person it said it was from. Usually looks like spam and a link embedded in the message body, but some come with an actual attachment. If one person without good current AV running clicks on that attachment the sender can get a whole fresh pile of e-mail addresses to send their worm virus to. I hate it when people don't clean all or even any of the addresses from their Fwd:, FWD:, Fwd: from their stupid hoax emails and blindly follow the instructions to send on along to everyone in their address books.bang

That's one way this stuff propagates.
I have a relative who's been told by multiple people in our family to stop doing that. Hasn't soaked in yet.

I continue to get some spoofed junk from a customer who hasn't used that particular email address in over 6 years. Those go straight into the trash and never even read.

My phone got spoofed a few years ago, started getting calls from all over the country, people were literally yelling at me and cussing me out that they didnt want my credit card offer. Had to shut off the phone and change numbers. I could have seriously harmed those responsible

Change email password if they have not already.
Change all other passwords as well
If they have not hit your bank, they will not likely. It would have been the first move.
Hopefully for your sake, it is just a scam to get your email contacts, which are valuable to scam artists
