Don't need one, just wondering.

I have see the computer printouts from Coast Guard Honda's. One at 7500 and the other over 10,000 hrs. Both with no problems. Except they keep hitting the oyster beds with the lower units! bang

Yep, I did a lot of work down on the Louisiana coast and watched work boat after work boat come by with a big Honda on the back. Either there is a heck of a marine dealer down there in that area, or they know something I don't know. I think Honda's only problem now is marketing. Maybe Honda is the next "comer" into this market.
Thanks for the reply.

I don't think Honda is interested in the bass boat market. As much money as they have they would have already went after it.

I know early Yam SHO's also had problems with the oil pumps. I wown a 2011 SHO 250. It has been flawless. They sent me a letter offering to replace the powerhead at no charge and gave me until May 2017 to get it done. Fun & Sun just did it.

To be clear I have owned 20 Mercs and 6 Yams over the years. Had good luck with all of them. The Mercs are slightly faster on the same hull. For Two-Strokes I would go Merc all the way but Yamaha owns the Four-Stroke market. If you don't believe me, go down to the coast and see what's on back of 98% of all the offshore boats.

I fished with a guide out of Galveston last summer that had twin 225 Yams on his Contender that had 3,400 hours on them each. He told me all he had done was change the LU grease and the water pump impeller each year. eeks

Guess both of my may pops got that out of the way before I got them. I thought 56 hours was a little suspicious but the boat looks it.

I wonder why they don't hold up like that on bass boats? I have been toying with the notion of buying a new or newer used boat the past few years. Its amazing how many of the 2011-2015 used boats with less than 500hrs have had the power head replaced.

I got an '06 Merc 225 pro XS. It's seized up twice. The first time in October of '10 replaced under my extended warranty thank goodness. This year in February it seized again. That one I had to pay for. Both times the #6 piston seized. Merc says the motor was too cold for hi speed operation with cold water temp, I should have let it warmed up the said. I didn't have temp gauge, I do now but I know the motor was warm both times and the water wasn't that cold either time.DOn't know ow many hours were on the first power head but the total hours of both of them was only 441 hours in only 11 years. So watch out for these motors.

Suzuki's have a rep for being super reliable just not that fast, just like Honda.

If you google any engine model you are going to find horror stories on the web. The people without issues don't post things on the internet. So you end up with an internet fueled confirmation bias. The HDPI's are great engines.

Buy one with an hour meter and make sure to have a mechanic check before purchase. Don't trust I think it has around 200 hours. Also get a warranty if possible.

He speaks the truth. You can get a lemon with any of them. Saw a Mercedes broke down on the side of the road. Back in the day I had a 40hp Firestone that never gave a bit of trouble. Just got to maintain them.
