Never could tell the thump thing.. I just looked at the stem, yellow spot, and pushed int on it.. and it sprang back pretty good.. was an indicator or lots of juice.. so it must have been ripe.

Cut it open. If it taste good then it's ripe. If not throw it away and get another one.

Cut it open. If it taste good then it's ripe. If not throw it away and get another one. That's been the method so far. Two biggest melons weren't ripe

I was taught to rub your fingers across the melon and feel for the ridges, if it has a smooth feel it's not ripe. Maybe true, or maybe luck but seems to work.

since ive read this post, ive picked out maybe 3 or 4 watermelons using the info on this thread. the brown curly stem with the big yellow spot has been a winner every single time. this little nugget of info has been proven to be 100% more valuable than anything i've learned from a college education. thanks guys.
