So we're just trolling around to see if the wind will stop this afternoon, looking for sandies or something the wife can reel in, and low and behold a good slab, I marked it and went back, jigs,minnows, jig tipped w/minnow. Narrie a bite, I could see them but notta. What gives?

Sometimes, that's just the way it is. Bigger fish can be more territorial and isolated. Not a hard, fast rule but common. Be sure to stop by there earlier or later in the day if there is any structure nearby. They may have just not been biting, or someone had beat you to it already.
