In reality the "20V" battery only sits at 20 volts (not in use) until the trigger is pulled then it drops to 18 volts. So I can't say that it matters if you exchange it or not.

Give it back to her, tell her to go get the 20v. And don't come back until she does.
Next question.

Don't post here much, but enjoy reading. Was encountered with this situation today: my mother in law buys me a brand new 18v Dewalt cordless drill for my birthday. Problem is, (first world problem, I know) I've had my eye on the new 20v Dewalt cordless drills. Would it be ethical to return the 18v my mil gave me as a birthday gift and pay the cash difference for the 20v? Mind you, my mother in law comes to my house quite often, and will probably use the drill in the future and in doing so, will probably notice the difference. What say ye, all mighty OT? Wait, your mother in law will use your drill? Without going into too much detail, she practically remodeled her whole house on her own. Father in law is life long Navy overseas. She's had to learn to do things her self. She knows how to use a drill and definitely would know the difference in an 18v and 20v

I see no issue exchanging the drill if it's still new.

My MIL does what I tell her when I tell her, and thanks me.

Next question. My favorite response so far And he is saying what I'd do, except I'd do all of it myself and when it came up, I'd explain why I did what I did and express how thankful I was she bought me such a great gift but I slightly upgraded it to what I would've bought myself.

My wife was raised by her grandmother, I have no idea what a mother in law is like. If you wanted the 20v, and she got you an 18v, it seems to me she owes you 2v's... Grow a pair and go get a couple v's from your MIL...

Are you scared of her? What does your wife tell you to do? My wife is the one who would be clueless and wouldn't care either way if I kept it or exchanged it. Deal is, I dont wanna screw up this gift giving deal from my mil. If she finds out I returned it she might think I not appreciative and stop with the gift giving. I know, I'm greedy.
