Don't post here much, but enjoy reading. Was encountered with this situation today: my mother in law buys me a brand new 18v Dewalt cordless drill for my birthday. Problem is, (first world problem, I know) I've had my eye on the new 20v Dewalt cordless drills. Would it be ethical to return the 18v my mil gave me as a birthday gift and pay the cash difference for the 20v? Mind you, my mother in law comes to my house quite often, and will probably use the drill in the future and in doing so, will probably notice the difference. What say ye, all mighty OT?

Do it. She might not even notice the change.

Tell her it broke, you returned it and the store had a sale on the 20v for the same price as what she paid for the 18v.

Tell her you loved the gift. Then tell her you knew she would be using it too, but that she'd never spend the extra money on herself, but you thought she was worth it.

Those 20V are work horses I promise. I see nothing wrong with that and hell both are black and yellow. She probably would never tell the difference.

Does she also come over and do your yard work too, or does she just come over just to fix things?

I'm not sure which model she bought you, but I have an 18v DeWalt that was a pretty nice kit---drill, two batteries, charger, and bag. I bought it on sale for I think around $100, and have been happy with if for what I do with it.

I was part of a volunteer project at my wife's school to put up an outdoor activity center. A guy had an 18V DeWalt that was different than mine. It was actually smaller in size. However, I think that thing might remove a lug nut from a truck. It was a beast for its size.

Like mine, it could lock the chuck or be an impact. But it was much more powerful.

As far as ethics, ask your wife. Nothing else matters. grin

Wait, your mother in law will use your drill?

Don't know how I didn't think of this earlier, but this is looking like my best bet

That is unfortunate. The 18V is not bad. Dad has one and it has been a good tool.

Lol, I knew I was gonna get this response. I do my own yard work, but she does come over to help my wife do things when I am gone to work

Are you asking for our help, so you can fabricate a lie? Well, you came to the right place, lots of good suggestions above, this was my thinking as well
