Fishing one of my good night crappie spots last night and caught dozens of small stripers from 5 - 15 inches. They are making it rough on the ghost minnow fry and crappie fishermen. I went through three dozen minnows and only got three keeper crappie. Caught a whole bunch of tiny stripers. If it keeps raining PK will need the same limits as texoma. others think I'm am right on this. http://www.possumkingdomtexas.com/fishing-reports--Striper-numbers-high-at-Possum-Kingdom/4431

I didn't think Stripers spawn naturally in PK. Sounds like she rebounded nicely from the golden algae kill

If there is enough flow long enough at the right time there can be!

If there is enough flow long enough at the right time there can be! That is true.

If there is enough flow long enough at the right time there can be! That is true. That is what happened. I have caught hundreds of yearling Stripers this year, and they did not stock them last year. They stocked them the year before, and the conditions were pretty much the same with running water. I suppose they probably spawned then, but it would be hard to prove. I was catching 3-4" stripers in my cast net last year about this time as well. Lets just hope that we don't get another algae kill, and this lake will be great once again in a couple of years. It is wake boat season out there now, and the jackwagons are as ignorant as ever this year.

TPWD confirmed a year class of stripers that should not be there in PK. We had a spawn. Granbury has so many yearlings as well and was not stocked in 2016, so either Granbury had a spawn as well or they all came down from PK.
Ask your biologist at the TPWD. You can send them an email.

Michael, since it's on the same chain, do you know if Lake Whitney had a spawn?

So it is just running water that incites the spawn? I was under the impression it was salinity ,like the red river (what a guide told me in the 80's)

Judging by the rust on my boat trailer PK is mighty salty.

so someone hit me with some facts, without looking it up i know that striper have to have running water so the eggs travel for what, 48 hours? to hatch. So does salinity play a big role also?

I have heard the eggs need running water for 20-50 miles. Not sure how true that is though. But it would make sense seeing how PK was flowing hard during the last couple springs.

Luke: There are so many small striper now I'm about to give up crappie fishing for a while. The crappie are mixed in with Sandbass and small stripers and it's hard to catch the crappie now that the lake is not as clear. The super clear water we had before the rain really helped the crappie fishing.
I guess I'll be back to trolling crankbaits for striper. In the evening I only see one small shad ball. Not sure where I can get shad this year. I may need to learn to fish with slabs.

I read somewhere, but cant remember where, that what the salinity does, or an aspect of the salinity anyways, is increase the buoyancy of the eggs, keeping them suspended and keeping them from getting stuck on the bottom, so that they have time to hatch. This article said time afloat was the keep to maximizing the hatch, so distance, swiftness of the water (also helping the eggs not settle to the bottom), salinity, etc.. all are aspects maximizing the time.
