I love fishing and looking to start fishing much more often. I have primarily done bank and kayak fishing (with cheap equipment) and plan on buying a kayak soon to go out at least once a week. I want to invest in some decent rods and reels. I can figure out brands of both on my own, but where I want everyone's expertise is in what should I get from a setup standpoint?
I figure 3-4 new rod/reel combos would keep me plenty busy for some time. What kind of setups would you recommend I get and how should I fish them?

What are some of your favorite baits to throw? That way we can tell you what rods go better with those baits.

Which 4 baits would you have tied on most of the time?

Thanks for the replies!!
I generally have stuck with TX rig or Wacky rig but with a kayak I would plan on fishing outside of my comfort zone to get better and have some fun.
Also, when giving recommendations, can you be specific on the rod type. Heavy, Heavy medium, fast tip, length, etc? All that stuff kind of mystifies me.
Also, I plan to primarily fish lakes around the DFW area.

A moving (crankbait, swimbait) rig 1. 6'9"-7' Medium/Fast rod with 5.4:1 reel w/ 15lb Mono (topwaters and crankbaits) 2. 7'6" Heavy/Fast rod with 7.1:1 reel 15-20 lb fluoro 3. 7'-7'3" Medium Heavy - Heavy/Mod-Fast rod with 7.1:1 reel 15-20 ln fluoro 4. 7' Medium Heavy/Mod rod with 6.4:1 reel w/ 15-20 lb fluoro (other moving baits - spinnerbait, swim jig, chatterbait, etc.) Edit: just realized this wasn't the original poster but this is still probably a good start.

1) 6'6"-7" Med action for top water, jerkbait, crankbaits 2) 6'6"-7" Med Hvy for spinnerbait, buzzbait, chatterbait, swimjig, senko, etc. 3) 7"-7"6 Hvy (Braid) - jigs, frogs, swimbait, pitchi/flipping, C-rig (Falcon Cara Amistad is a great all around rod for this) (Bucoo ST Amistad might be more in your budget)
If you are only fishing ponds you may not need much more. Maybe another MH rod for soft plastics. If you are fishing lakes you might want a spinning reel for dropshot, shakeyhead, etc.

One tip for kayak fishing is to, just generally speaking, downsize one power from what someone in a boat would select. Matt and Tim on YouTube's Tactical Bassin made this observation. You yank and the fish moves but so does the kayak. So, instead of a MH, you might go with a M.
And, really long rods are tough to use from a kayak if you fish seated, so where the guys gave you some good length ranges, stay on the shorter side of their recommendations.
My 2 cents.
Brad

From a kayak, anything longer than 7'4" becomes cumbersome (difficult to store on deck/etc)
Positioning and dealing with wind are a challenge--Medium spinning rods for lighter lures helps a lot by increasing your margin of error
From a kayak, you lose a lot of leverage (when you set the hook the kayak moves toward the fish and the fish moves toward you)--after years of trial and error, I've settled on braid to Pline CXX for almost all applications except frogs and flipping thick cover--straight braid
Some brands medium is more like medium heavy and some brands medium heavy is more like a medium. With moving baits I'd error on the softer, more parabolic side and with slow moving plastics I'd go on the stronger/stiffer more backbone side.
Two 7ft Medium spinning rods/reels (one for moving baits medium/moderate action--jerkbaits, small topwaters, small cranks and one for plastics fast action--weightless senkos, split shot, light shaky head/ned rig, drop shot) 20lb braid to 12lb Pline CXX
Two 7ft Medium heavy baitcasting rods/reels (one medium-fast action for moving baits--spinner baits, larger cranks, larger topwaters and one for plastics fast action--lighter t rig and crig, light jigs, heavier shaky head) 30-50lb braid to 17lb Pline CXX
One 7ft Hvy--pitching, frogs, heavier jigs 65lb braid to 20lb Pline CXX or straight braid.

It is easy to say 4 rigs now and go really specific on matching rod/reels to techniques, but like almost all of us you are going to end up with more tackle than you can carry with you. My advise would be to keep it simple.
2x 7' mh baitcasting 2x 7' m spinning
You can optimize perfect later when you actually know what your confidence baits are, but you can throw anything with those setups, don't overthink it too hard.

All, thanks for the advice! I knew you'd help me out. Now I just have to get the kayak and rods/reels and start catching some fish.
