Mark, I'm not dreaming. We all know y'all do a hard job. And very skilled job at that. More than that it's appreciated. It's a different deal. You work 24 off 48. Some traded shifts, mix in a vacation day here and there and it's really not a lot of your life missing. You have less travel time weekly to work and home and way to many other perks to list. But how many of the 24 are spent eating, sleeping, and doing routine day to day things that you do at home vs real work like calls and fires? It's a great job, with excellent pay and benifits and not everyone could do it we all know that. I hear Frisco is starting their rookies at over 90k. Can you confirm? I might change careers after my elbow heals up. Lol! Please don't read into what I said the wrong way. If I wanted to get under your skin, I'd of simply stated that y'all save every foundation you pull up to. 65k for a rookie FF/Paramedic

PPE may be hot, but OSHA also requires that employers provide shade, rest and water. All that drives up the cost of our products. Right?

Put on a full set of bunker gear and pack out then go get you some of that raging house fire at noon on a hot July day. It's awesome. Yeah but, it don't last long. Just how long do you think you would last doing it? 15-20 minutes and you are spent. Some fires last hours and hours. Yall are dreaming if you think we go99 shifts without a fire. Hell some shifts you have more than one. Throw in the industrial places like grain elevators, lumber manufacturers, etc and you can be there 12hrs or so. Longview went all of March without any fire. They said that was a first in awhile. Tyler Welding Supply had an explosion yesterday. They let it burn for 24hr plus. Interesting you mentioned industrial places.

We now have light weight gear for mvc's,extrications, medical calls at night . Only time we wear our bunker gear now is at training and fires. When you can pour sweat out of your boots only after 30 minute , you know it's some hot stuff.
We do alot of training mixed in with sleep, eating , house chores , and calls . Still the best job in the World , even if they are trying to make it more white collar

I seriously doubt they are starting out that high. That is top out at many cities. Hell that's $30000 over top out in a lot of Texas cities. The rest we will just agree to disagree on. I knew te score when I took the job. I love what I do, enjoy helping others and am blessed to have a stable job. No complaints here at all. I would not expect anyone that does not do to job to truly understand it same as I am clueless about your job. Also not all FDs operate the same. For instance I am on my 3rd 48hrs shift in a row. Have had about 4hrs sleep so far on this go around and still have 2hrs left...lol...we are short 3 guys that were hurt on fires etc and they have had to have surgery etc so we are having to fill in. No big deal at all on any of it. My only intent was to say we were a lot of PPE in some extreme environments is all.

We have some seriously potent acids in the wet chemical area of our Analysis lab. PPE is vital. Even though we deal with very small portions at a time, one mistake and it could be big. Face shields, aprons, sleeves, and gloves are must. We have not had any incidents, thanks to PPE.

When does the PPE standard become too much for Texas heat?
I watched a guy in an orange jumpsuit, hard hat, leather gloves, steel toe boots, and safety glasses walking around near death painting yellow paint on objects in full sun.
Meanwhile the safety guys are hidden in their offices with 65 degree A/C blowing their wigs (I froze to death walking into their offices).
We wonder why USA products cost so damn much? Here is a sign!! Some safety guy earning his wages and making people miserable, and possible health issues (which would increase cost). BBT, I'm a "Safety Guy" and agree with you to a point. The real question is "What is an acceptable risk"? Why would you put someone in danger of a heat related illness just to paint something? In general, I also believe that wearing FRC is ridiculous (It's not even the law anymore, nor has it been for over 5 years now). If you have any questions about anything safety related, I'd be glad to give you my opinion.

I spent quite a few years working for an oil company, Refining Division.
FRC is sure enough a joke in a Chemical plant. Liquid runs right through light weight FRC. Would be better off with Cotton in some cases.
FRC is one of the reasons I moved into Sales.
I still have to suit up every now and then to get in some of the plants I call on. The light weight FRC I have is not as hot as the some of the stuff from years back.
Wranglers shirts and pants with lots of starch are not the coolest clothing on the planet either, but probably cooler than FRC
Thanks, Billy

I have worn Nomex FRC for the most part of 30 yrs. I know how hot they can get. I saw one guy in an electrical flash fire. He had a pinhole in the front of his coveralls. He ended up with a blister the size of baseball. can't imagine what size it would have been if he hadn't had them on.

We are lucky as we are supplied with ice vests for the hot weather. Have several chest freezers full of the blue ice inserts. A little heavy but sure will keep you cool.
