Seems like there is a specific time of year that it is known that the fishing under the birds for schoolie trout is really predictable in Port O'Connor/Espiritu Santo Bay. A buddy and I got into them like this one year but I cannot remember when it was. I was thinking July, is that correct?

I know a lot of locals don't pay much attention to this, it being known they are smaller trout, but the reason I'm asking is I have a fishing buddy who wants to take his boat to the coast for the first time and fly fish. Its a Sea Hunt bay boat so shallow but not super shallow poling the flats type boat. I've been to Port O a few times but mostly offshore and no fly fishing, so I'm just trying to think of way to get him on some success with his boat. Seemed like fishing under the birds would be a good way.

Any other ideas are certainly welcome. Thanks in advance.

The only thing I've ever caught under birds are gafftop and skipjacks.

Ha, yeah, and they can be fun too! I've heard that a lot and experienced it too. But in just the few times I've gotten into this, we caught some decent little just under or overs trout in okay numbers. But that was ten years ago so...

Just looking for a way to help this guy get into some success with our relative inexperience. I'm wondering too if East or West Matagorda would be better for this, but I've never been over there.

Right now stake you a piece of south shore that has bait working and go wade for them.

We was in there last week and did great. We limited out on trout in the Espiritu Santo Bay throwing Hogie swim baits drifting under the birds. We caught a 2 person limit and like Pat said, we caught alot of lady fish and a few gaff top... Gulp shrimp under a popping cork worked also but only yielded undersized trout and a big red.
