Have been shopping around and cabelas offers two gen-2HDS-9 with the lss2 box and gps puck plus Ethernet cables for $2k. Is this not the best deal on an entry level setup for a boat with old 2d only graphs.

Give bbg, universal mania, shut up and fish, or Russel marine a call and they will get you the best deals on a "boat in a box" bundles. That's the easiest route

Are they way cheaper? Seems like everything I've seen on the gen 3's is $3500+. Bit more than I was looking to spend. But want big enough the side scan is useful.

You could have 2 Garmin 93sv for about 1800ish

Go to the Lowrance Factory Outlet store. You can get a Lowrance Elite 7ti total scan for $799.00
Color, touch screen with side/down scan. I have one and love it.
