Got out to the Paluxy River yesterday. Started off fishing a dry dropper with a soft hackle suspended under a Llano Bug and caught a good number of assorted sunfish (bluegill, redbreast, longear and greens) and a small largemouth. Eventually switched to some crawfish patterns I tied up and hooked up with three more largemouth, two of which were pretty nice, and a chunky green sunfish. The craws were thrown on my $30 combo, made up of a 7' Eagle Claw Featherlight and Martin 63 tuna can reel. A great little small stream rod.

Anyone have any idea what this craw pattern is called? Or is it just a generic craw pattern whose origins are unknown? I first saw it at the fly fishing/beer festival in Plano a few months back. It was being sold by a local custom rod maker, Dubl Hawl, but was just listed at the show and on his website as a crawfish fly. I bought two of his flies and recreated it, and they are fish catching machines.

Nice video can we have a close up or step by step of the fly? Might I suggest debarbing your hook, that poor sunfish must feel like he has been you the dentist.

I'll see what I can do about getting some pictures and writing up a step by step procedure for the fly. I use barbless hooks on all my smaller flies but keep them on my larger bass flies since bass jump and headshake. I have had horrible luck with barbless hooks on weighted flies coming out on bass when they jump (I am thinking because they get such good leverage on the longer shanked hooks with the weight so far from the bend), so the barbs stay in place even though I am only catch and release on freshwater fish.

I've not seen that particular craw pattern before, though it appears to be a simple tie.

It is a very simple tie.

Hook: Gamakatsu B10S Size 2 (could be tied a bit smaller)
Thread: Matched to color of claws
Claws: Zonker strips (I like the barred versions)
Body: Chenille matched to color of claws
Antennae: Rubber legs and krystal flash
Eyes: Dumbbell
Other: Laser Dub
Bucktail: Whatever color you choose

Step 1: Tie on dumbbell eyes
Step 2: Tie krystal flash and rubber legs on at rear of hook, extended back out 1 to 2 hook lengths past the bend. You can always cut them shorter later.

Step 3: Take a small pinch of ice dub and tie it in over the top of the tie in points for the antenna. When tied in it should extend a bit past the back of the hook. I should have added a little more here; as you can see it kind of disappears once the claws are tied in during the next step. I initially assumed it was in there to help keep the claws separated. Not sure it really does that, but I do like how it looks.

Step 4: Tie in the claws at the rear of the hook.
Step 5. Tie in chenille and wrap forward to just behind the eyes.

Step 6: Flip the hook over and tie in a small clump of bucktail so that it extends back to the hook point.

Step 7: Whip finish and add head cement.

As you can see in this photo, the ice dub (tan in this case) should be visible once the claws are tied on. I like the tan ice dub since it has some orange flash in it. I use it on the orange and olive craws, but used the black on the red fly.

Does the dumbbell eye on the top of the hook shank not make it turn upside down?

Thankyou for the instructions, simple enough, I like the dumbbell / beadchain to keep the hook up, the bucktail will also help to keep the hook up.

Yes, it makes it ride upside down. I am assuming it was designed this way to keep it from hanging up as it is fished along the bottom.

Looks like a good fly. Im used to tying them with hackle claws and peacock tails. I do wonder if tying the dumbbell eyes closer to the bend of the hook would make it swim more like a crawdad.
