I currently have a 1197 at the console and 858 up front. Been fishing with a few guys that have hds12's and it seems to be much easier to identify fish. I realize these 2 graphs are not in the same league, but I am struggling to get my 1197 to get a decent display on 2d and SI. Looking to upgrade to a helix 12 or hds12 but I would think my current unit should be able to get the job done. Is an electronics dummy going to have better luck with a newer unit?

Probably not. To me the humminbird core units don't get as good of 2d pictures as Lowrance but have better SI pictures. I upgraded to a Helix 12 with chirp on the 2d and it is great. You should still be getting good enough 2d with what you have. I'd invest a little money to spend some time with an electronics guide who will set up your units to optimal settings and then show you how to use them to their full potential.

Slade over at Fork can get you going with your current units in no time. 817-797-8762. I've got a 998 on the bow and he tuned it then showed me how to identify fish. Money well spent.

The first step is to level the transducer with the boat loaded like you normally run and at the boat speed you normally run at when scanning, probably somewhere about 3-4 MPH. There are several you tube videos on how to do it. It's not hard to do. The installation instructions that come with the sonars just don't get you there.
