I will be tagging along with my wife as she goes to Denver for work in August. I'd like to break away and do so fishing while she is at work. Does anybody have a guide that they recommend near Denver? Thanks!

Curious about this as well. I'll be spending a few days in Denver in mid-September. I'm definitely planning on fishing a few areas in the RMNP, and would appreciate any pointers anyone would like to share.

I went with my wife to a big vet conference there a couple years ago and would drop her off at the convention center downtown and fish all day until time to pick her up in the evening. I typically just went out to Golden and fished all up and down Clear Creek above town almost to I70. Lots of fish, but size wasn't huge or anything, but still fun.

There are some small community lakes that hold fish. Look for trails that run near and along streams in the mountains. If you have the time and are willing to do a light hike, you can catch a lot of fish if you're willing to hike a mile or so.

Thanks for your responses. It sounds like my best bet will be just finding a river and exploring on my own. Would you guys recommend packing waders for an august trip?

Shouldn't need waders in August. We normally go in July and don't need them then....

I'm going to go with it depends on where you go. If you are around Denver probably not. If you head into the mountains, then yes.

When I lived there, I went in August and I have never owned a pair of waders. I tried to cross a little stream to get to the other side which had less trees and I didn't get very far. The water was still pretty dang cold.

How long will she be working each day? If my wife(if had one)was working 8-10 a day in Denver I might find my self 2.5 hours away exploring lol.

If you have the time and want to go it alone, 11 mile canyon is a nice tailwater. For me the fishing has always been hit or miss, but the scenery is beautiful. Take some beef jerky for the foxes.

11 mile canyon was my home waters while I was stationed at FT Carson. I fished my 3 wt BVK most often in the 10' configuration. 90% of the time I had on a Rainbow Warrior, and a RS2. 5% a Pink squirrel and a Gunslinger. Other 5% was using Dries. Adams, BWO, or Trico spinners usually with a RS2 as a second fly. Always went on my own for all my trips, never hired a guide.

If you go that route, Peak Fly shop provides great services. The have shops in both Colorado Springs and Woodland Park. Brad, his mom and Dad will take care of you weather its guide services, or just fly selections.

As said above 11 mile canyon will be prime for the trico hatch between 10-12. The 1st mile below the dam can be combat fishing but the water boils when the tricos show.

Upstream from 11 mile is Spinney Mtn Res. and will be prime dryfly action on callibaetis and damsels in the shallows. Look for risin fish and place the fly near- great site fishing for 20" + bows and browns.

Antero has been closed since 2015 and reopens June 5, another world class lake. A float tube or pontoon is handy but wading the shoreline is doable.
