Oh no, you started the debate. You proceed. I'm getting out of here.....too nice outside to sit around. BTW my old 3/4 ton Dodge with the 5.9L Engine is a tank....you don't want me to hit anyone. Sucker weights a ton (not literally..so don't start that debate also). Also those safe air bags? LOL! I had mine recalled on the driver side last year (I know on an 06 truck I still get notice, thanks Dodge!)....this year I just got notice the passenger side needs replaced. Safety First huh!  I get to sit in the dealership and stare at the wall again. Here you go. All types of data, but it only goes back to 1975 and, since I started the debate using the 70s, I choose to stay within that time frame. I especially like the chart titled "Motor vehicle crash deaths per 100,000 people, by type, 1975-2015." 1975: Population: 215,035,164 Number of deaths: 31,724 Rate: 14.2% 2015: Population: 321,418,820 Number of deaths: 22,543 Rate: 7.0% Another great chart lists the crash deaths per 100 million miles driven. 1975 rate: 3.35%. 2015 rate: 1.12%. All the force has to go somewhere away from the passengers or driver. Thats the basic concept of crumple zone. Crumple zones help redistribute the force of impact from the cars body. Parts of the car are built with structures designed to be damaged, crushed, broken, and crumpled but it takes force to damage them. Crumple zones are primarily designed to do just as it says, to crumple and to crush. By doing so, it reduces the impact of force sent through the car interior.

Depends on how you look at it. Do you like being in an accordion going 85mph or a tank going 55mph? I'd rather be in a tank myself.
If we really want to dive into this...lets look at fatality statistics from 1950 and 2017. Today's cars are designed to be destroyed but save the driver. It's safer to have crumple zones in the frame, airbags every six inches, anti-lock brakes, three point seat belts, lane monitoring systems, etc than everyone driving five thousand pound steel tanks with just a lap belt. But, yes, let's look at fatality statistics from 1950 and, to make it fair, 2016. You start. This should put to rest the myth that older cars are safer:

I have a coworker (that I can't stand) that says the same thing..."Today's cars are just made of plastic!". Not really, just the bumper covers, but then again they really don't have bumpers anymore (on cars not trucks). Why?...the unibodies with crumple zones built in are much safer.

Car probably weighed three times the Malibu. This isn't controversial: cars are safer today than they were in the 1950s or any time until recent history.

Look how well the drug ban is working.
No way to enforce it. I use my phone all the time for the gps. How will a cop know I was using navigation and not texting??

Just to clarify you are saying we should legalize drugs and a cop would not know to check the phone history to see if you were texting...is that all correct  J/K but I completely disagree with your argument...

Just to clarify you are saying we should legalize drugs and a cop would not know to check the phone history to see if you were texting...is that all correct J/K but I completely disagree with your argument... Where I would expect to see such a law come into play is investigation of a car accident. Police just have to get the phone records from the carrier (Sprint, AT&T, etc) and see whether the driver was texting prior to the accident. Then that driver gets walloped with penalties and/or punitive damages.
