I have had the best luck with 1/8oz heads with #2 hook. I use the toothbrush bristle type weed less type in and around brush/cover.

The type of Plastic I have had the best luck with is a 1.5" to 2" tadpole shape in a pearl with blue and silver flecks.

I do use other heads and plastics but the aforementioned is what I catch a lot of fish on in a lot of different water. When casting and reeling I like Roadrunners. Hard to beat a curly tail or marabou Roadrunner.

Get a few jigs and use them, leave the minnows at home or you will never learn. Go with a buddy or someone that has experience so you will gain confidence in your methods.

Best hint: Hold the jig as still as possible most of the time. If that doesn't work slowly raise the rod tip a couple of feet and slowly lower it. Most beginners think they should jig the bait a lot.

Jig is the name of the lure, not the action you should give it.

Good luck

Thanks for the help guys.
Went out to Lavon from 530-12 last night. I used jigs only. Dad used minnows. I did well until dark and then he caught quite a few more than me with the minnows.
I'm gonna stick with the jigs and see if I can't get better.

Did you adjust color to changing light penetration in water?

My friend taught me everything that I know about crappie fishing but not everything he knows. He is very, very successful at crappie fishing. Virtually getting a limit every time he fishes. Listening to him has allowed to become a better crappie fisherman. What we do may be different than a lot of other people do. We use a double jig setup. We use a 1/4 oz. jig on the bottom and 1/8 oz. jig on top (while it seems that many prefer lighter jigs). But I agree what Ernest says in that a lot has to do with what you have confidence in. I have bought LOTS of jigs of various colors by various makers. For me, I have since narrowed it down to Midsouth Tackle (out of Arkansas) - about seven different colors, Crazy Angler Slab Bandits (about 12 different colors), and a few Bobby Garland jigs (about three different colors). In all I have about 24 different jigs that. I use and that is several more than what my friend uses. We change depths quickly not staying at any depth for more than 10-15 seconds. We're also jigging during that 10-15 seconds. Now other people have their own method and brand of jigs that they use and are successful with. Again, it comes down to preference and confidence in yourself, your method(s), and your baits. Just like finding that rod and reel that you like and have confidence in, it's the same with jigs and fishing methods.

Yea I did adjust colors when the bite stopped. I went from purple/chart to white/chart. And then tried a few other colors too. Tried fishing in and out of the light as well.

I can understand that if your vertical jigging, but if you cast to a visible brush pile.....just cast and allow it to sink slowly and keep an eye on your line? Line jumps it's a fish......?

Thank you Lord for the gifts in my life

Pls pm me if that helps.

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

Teach a man to fish, he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer.

I crappie guide on Lake Sam Rayburn, so I fish alot of brush piles. And like you I have tried many different jigs. By far the best jig I have ever used is one by a little known jig company. You can go to their website which is www.timmytoms.com
They have a weed guard on them. I thought the weed guard would make me miss crappie bites, but it doesn't.
They make them to your specs and take about 3-4 weeks to get, but they are worth it!
