I have a hoist that currently uses a 4x4 1/4 inch thick steel I-beam in a 6 foot span. I need a new piece to span 10 feet. What kind of strength or weight will this support lifting from the middle of the beam? Do I need to go bigger?

Not sure, but I did want to ask about the dustless blasting. Have you started that yet? I was watching a car show on Velocity this weekend and they did a feature about it. The guy that represents the DB system even made a comment about how some people buy them for extra income...like a policeman! He said that with other examples, but it did make me think he was talking about you.

You'd need to get the specs and ratings on your hoist and cable to be sure. Probably wouldn't cost much more to upsize to a 4x6" beam. That would give you a good bit of extra weight capacity without having any other changes to your hoist.

On the side, there should be a label telling you the lifting capacity.

Since you're going to extend the length, you will reduce the weight capacity, since extending out the length reduces the stability.

The electric hoist is rated for 1100lbs single line or 2200 with a snatch block. The pulley is in the center of the 6 foot beam and will be in the center of the 10 foot beam, supported on the sides of the 10 foot beam.

It's main purpose will be lifting cabs, engines, frames. Nothing anywhere close to the lifting capacity of the electric hoist. Just want to make triple sure the beam is up for it

I would suggest with the increase you have stated to upgrade to a 4 X 4 3/8 as a direct ratio result of 25% increase of GWLR and cross sectional increase of the lifting beam. Also do not forgo your hoist base mounting and foundation footings are adequate to support a sustained load plus ESR of one and a half times the GWLR of the hoist for a starter. thumb peep

6" or 8" I beam. 3/16" or even better 1/4" flanges. Pick up what that hoist will. Also put a trolley on the I beam. Move side to side.
