Curious how many people leave their exterior lights on all night vs those who turn them off.

I am mainly coming from a security perspective. Our house is the only street on the block with, what I would consider, sufficient lighting around the house. We also are one of the only houses that have a privacy fence around the back/sides of the house along with an iron gate in front. I have our lights on a timer so they come on and stay on 30 min before dusk and 30 min after dawn. I have read conflicting philosophies here. Some think that the lights are a benefit/attraction to thieves while others say its a deterrent. Our house definitely stands out when you look down the block. I am wondering if my efforts to keep our property secure are misguided or right in line with what we need to be doing.

Better to leave lights on all night or turn them off when you go to bed? Please elaborate on your position.

I leave my front and back porch lights on all night. I think in general more light is better.

It also causes a glare on the windows from the outside so you can't see in the house unless you're right up on it.

I leave the front lights on all the time because one of the switches is in the garage and I always forgot to turn it on, so I just leave them on. I turn the back lights off in the morning.

All night long. Front porch light, lights to either side of front porch, lights over garage door, back porch light and landscape lighting. If the lights attract the bad guys, so be it. I have 8 exterior cameras that will take a very nice video of them. I began this practice and added some lighting/cameras after my vehicle was burglarized one night.

All night long here too. Front porch, lights on either side of front of house, lights over garage door and some landscape lighting.

All of them are photocell now. Front porch, back porch, and patio has LED spot light so my old dog can see. Street light at the end of the driveway. I don't like to trip in the darkness.

I normally turn them off when I go to bed. Most nights I forget.

Leave them on all the time, drives my wife nuts. I say well you can't remember to turn the light off in the toilet and the switch is right in front of you when you stand up. Somehow I never win that argument. bang

I have two spotlights in the front (2-story house), one shines down on the porch and front door and one illuminates the driveway. They run all night on a low setting, and kick into the bright setting when the motion detector is triggered. Auto off when the sun comes up and auto on to the low setting at dark.

I have solar LED spotlights on the house, front and back. On at dusk off at dawn. Pay for themselves pretty quick.
