The unit for upstairs took a big dump! I can hear the compressor try to turn on, then shuts off and the fan never starts. Compressor is locked up. Looks like I get a new A/C unit. What a PITA!

It's 60 degrees out. With a slight NE wind. Hopefully that will help a little.

Hope it don't cost to much to get fixed.

Why does the fan not come on just bc the compressor doesn't start?

Everything getting the right voltage. The inside units comes on but not the outside unit. We shut the main power switch off and when you turn it back on you can hear the compressor try for maybe a split second and then stops. Appears that it's locked up.

Maybe you'll get lucky and it's something simple.

Start capacitor.

Could that be it even though it's getting the right voltage on the meter??

Well I changed my post. I thought you were talking about the fan not running.

We replaced the contactor outside and the control trans in the attic and the thermostat. Nothing has fixed the primary issue.

Yeah you're not going to be able to tell if the capacitor is good by measuring voltage. The capacitor is storing energy and only delivering when it's called for. I'd replace it and see what happens. Make sure the capacitor is replaced like for like measured in microfarads.

Thanks! Anything is worth a shot before replacing the whole unit! It is a 1997 model that's R-22 though so I don't even know how available parts are for it!
