Threw about every color DSL I had this weekend... couldn't catch more than an oyster shell. Switched to topwater and boom! Wife was using live shrimp and switched to gulp.. she caught em pretty consistently all weekend.
I clearly need more practice with the plastics.

Mako,
I held off using Gulp because it was just messy and stinky. The bags they make for them are not conducive for wade fishing when they leak that stinky stuff on your shirt while they are in your pocket.
Two things changed my mind.
1) I was out in a boat fishing oil/gas platforms on deep shell pads with my cousin which is also a guide and we had taken our kids with us (two 10 YO & one 21 YO). Fishing was slow ... croakers were lethargic. My cuz had some Gulp so I decided to rig one up on a 1/4 oz. Glow Rockport Rattler jig that I invented. BAM !!! I caught 5 trout on 5 straight casts and then we rigged the kids up with'em and BAM !!! ... they started catching trout.
2) So I decided to try some Gulp wade fishing. Took a small vitamin bottle, emptied out the remaining vitamins, poured some Gulp juice in it, then clipped the Gulp for an easy fit for the Rockport Rattler jig and put 6 or 7 of them in it. The vitamin bottle worked great for storing the Gulp and easily fit in my shirt pocket.
Caught some decent trout and reds on them wade fishing at Location #8 in my book. Casting against the wind covering all the territory around me my fishing line wrapped around the end of my pole - no big deal, just stop fishing, bring the rod tip to my hands and undue the wrap. BAM !!! an 18" trout hit it w/o me working the lure at all.
They are now a part of my SaltH2O arsenal

Pat, do you ever use those plastics under a cork and if so which, please.
Also, do you ever throw a tandem rig with different colors. Thanks, eye.
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer.

Sand eel is death behind a mauler cork. That's my go to rig for noobs. It works well. I really like to feel the hit so I'm a bit hard headed before I'll tie one up but it's not because it's not working.

Iirc on some previous thread re Best Trout lures, someone said their favorite was croaker under a cork.
I find plenty of utube videos of speck fishing with croakers but none about using croakers under a cork.
Could anyone doing that elaborate.

eyeball, I have been using the Pearl (white) 3" Gulp
It's worked so well that I haven't had an excuse to try another color.

eyeball, I used to fish with a WWII Navy QuarterMaster who served in the Pacific theater.
Great guy to fish with and had a ton o' real life stories to tell, so I loved fishing with Tom.
Tom was fishing with an Alameda rattling cork and shrimp and caught a sizable croaker, ... so he threw both back out with the croaker under the cork and caught a 30" trout - the trout of his lifetime - so it was mounted and he was ~68 YO back then.
Nuthin' to it.

1. Gulp Shrimp 2. DOA Shrimp 3. H&H Cocahoe Minnows 3inch (By far the best lure for the price) 4. Gulp Swimming Alive Mullet in Chartreuse 5. Voodoo Shrimp
I throw a lot of shrimp lures because I have always had success with them, and love to fish birds when I can find them which usually means shrimp would be a solid bait.
Ive also always heard alot about DSL but have never thrown one myself.

Try the Berkley Swim Shad in 3" Firetiger in tandem with Berkley Swim Shad in 3" Bluegill. This combination is killer in the lights for trout, reds, and flounder!
